Tram the Boston Josraal. A Sad Doveloymeat—Tko Cose of Br. The whole commonitv has been astonished sod saddened bj the official annooncement in the morning papers that facta have vary recently come to the knowledge of the Prudential Committee of the American Board of Commi—ionen for Foreign Missions, deeply implicating tha moral character of Rev. Dr. Pomroy, one of the Secretaries of the Board, rendering it impossible that be should longer retain his official poaitioo as a Secretary of the Board, and that he had resigned, and his resignation had been accepted. There are in circulation various rumors in regard to this affair, some of them grossly exaggerated. The facta, as we learn them from a source which we deem reliable, are — follows: During the absence of Dr. Pomroy from this city a week or two since, quite a number of letters wars received at the Missionary House directed to him, and as most of the letters so received relate to the busine— ot the Board, they were opened by one of the other Secretaries. Among them were found some which furnished good groaid for the belief that Dr. Pomroy had either been guilty of criminal acts, which would destroy at once his moral and Christian character, or that he wag the victim of a conspiracy to extort money by the force of such charges. The letters were returned to the envelopes, and were placed upon Mr. Pommy's desk to await his return. On his return, be saw that the contents of the letters were known, and heat once made a statement to the other secretaries of what ho averred were the facts in the case, and requested them to present the same to the Prudential Committee. This was done, and Dr. Pomroy himself than went before the committee and made the same statement—which, aa we understand it, was in substance, that some months ago he was walking out in the evening, (which he was in the habit of doing) and was accosted by a well-dressed female, and at her request accompanied her home. While in the parlor in conversation with her a man came in, and under threat of exposure forced him to sign a note for $500, which he did, and subsequently paid it. Since that he was enticed by another female into another bouse, and there two men aaniled him and foreed him to Mgs another note for $500,which he eMbeequently paid. Another woman, by the representation that she was suffering with a dissipated husband and destitute children, enlisted hie feelings, and he opened a correspondence with her, and subsequently, by the advice of Mr. Choate, paid $500 to get his letters back, which he did, and destroyed. These statements we understand Dr. Pomroy admits to be true, but nothing farther, and there is no proof before the Board that any further wrong had been committed. He placed his resignation in the hands of the Prudential Committee, and it w— at once aceepted, and 8 committee was appointed to decade what course should be pursued. The result was the official announcement to which we have alluded before. The facts known have no connection whatever with his official action In any way. He had nothing to do with the Treasury of Be Board, which is a distinct department. Dr. Pomroy had been connected with the Board as one of its Secretari— for some twelve years. Previous to this he was pastor of a church in Bangor, Maine, for about twenty yean. He was one of the most prominent clergymen of his denomination in Maine. We can not recall a man who possessed to a higher degree the confidence and esteem of the Christian public, not only for his own, but of other denominations, and his fall, if such we must consider it, will be learned with the deepest surprise aad sorrow by every Christian and moral man in the community. It furnish— a sad evidence of the frailty of human nature.

Mr. Hector McDonald, of Canada, w— recently on a visit to Boston. When he left home hU family were enjoying good h—hh, and he anticipated a pleasant journey.
