Prkskrvino and Drying Wood.—M. M. Ilutln and Boutigny ore the onthors of a method of preserring wood, the prlneiple of which consists In the aMimilatton of the antiseptic substance with the vegetable itself, in place of impregnation with corrosive sublimate, or the chlorides o' zinc, calcium, iron, &o., which have been found, it ia said, to tear the woody fibre asunder by the irresistible force of chrystallsation. According to this principle, nothing more to necessary than simply to Immerse the code of etch piece to be preserved in any of the hydro carbons, such as ihs oil of schist, and set on fire the soda of the pirccs (hue treated, letting them burn until all the hydro carbon applied to burnt, when they are immediately dipped Into a hot mixture of pilch, tar and shellac, and may then be painted, terred, Ac. M. Gemini, In a paper read to tbe Paris Academy, testifies to the oeetruotion of fibres by the usual processes, and recommends Ur, creosote, naptha, or any of tbe highly bitominized articles easily and eoonomieally obutned. In regard to the drying of wood by steam, It to stated that if steam at the temperature of one hundred degrees, centigrade, be raised to a temperature of two hundred to two hundred and fifty degrees, without the addition of water, it is no longer saturated, and can, on tbe contrary, Uke
up the moisture contained In wood.
