sod obstinate questionings, as she calculates her chances of becoming aa old maid—aad asks her-
self, what was I created for, I wonder? Where is mj place in the world? Ah, she
sees presentlj, that is the question which most old maids are pvzzled to solve; other people solve
it lor them, bj saying:
“Your place is to do good to others, to be helpful whenever help is wanted.” This is right in some measure, she reflects, and a very convenient doctrine for the people who hold it; but she perceives that certain sets of human beings are very apt to maintain that other seta should give up their Uvea to them and their servioe* and then they requite them by praise—they call them demoted and virtuous. “la this enough? la it to live? Is there not a terrible hollowness, mockery, want, craving, in that existence which is given away to others, for want of something of your own to bestow it upon? I suspect thoreis.” And later, we are told that Caroline felt with pain that life (we have seen what that was) which made Miss Ainly happy could not make her happy; pore and active as it was in her heart she deemed it deeply dreary because it was so loveless—to her ideas so forlorn. And still later, a disquisition ensues on the social status of single women in England, and the author's belie! that they should have more to do—better chances of interesting and profitable occupation
than they possess now.
She complains, for example, that while the brothers in certain households she names are in business or in professions, their sisters have no earthly employment but stitching and sewing; no earthly pleasures but an unprofitable visiting; and no hope, in all their life to come, of anything better. “ I his stagnant state of things makes them decline in health; they are never well; and their| minds and views shrink to wondrous narrowness.” The great wish, she continues—the sole aim of every one of them is to be married, but the majority never will marry—they will die as they now live. They scheme, they plot, they dress to ensnare husbands. The gentlemen turn them into ridicule; they dou’t want them; they hold them very cheap; they say “the matrimoniai market is overstocked.” And then anon comes this apostrophe—“Men of England! look at your poor girls, many of them fading around you, dropping off in consumption or decline; or, what is worse, degenerating to sour old maids— envious, backbiting, wretched, because life is a desert to them; or, what is worst of all, reduced to strive, by scarcely modest coquetry and debasing artifice, to gain that position and consideration by marriage which to celibacy is denied.” Currer Bell at least spoke that she knew, and testified that which she had seen.—Bentley'a Mia
cellany.

Nortk and Sautk. The Knights Templar of Bostorf and Providince, since their return home, have been profuse in their expressions of gratification with their visit to Virginia. These interchanges of friendship and courtesy between the North and South are mutually beneficial, and the more fre quently they are made, the more accurate would be the information of each section in regard to tlie other, and, consequently, the more kindly and charitable would be their mutual judgments. A writer in the Boston Herald, who accompanied the Knights, thus pleasantly gives some of his
observations:
There is hardly a healthier town in the State than is Richmond. It is a very orderly city. With a population of forty thousand, twelve thousand of whom are slaves and twenty-five hundred are free negroes, they hav^unlj four day policemen and twenty-four night-watchmen.
