The winea which can be like tboee of Germany, Q| We o'ten bear it mid that them in nesa in F ranee, bat droakanaem in nrea rare among the wine-drinking Germane of dm Liebig, the great ebami people, far from being injured by their wine, owe to it the health for which they ire so fitmoos, there being no place ia the world where there is so little demand for But the reader will recollect very different from those at other nH'oaa, being no more intoxicating to those familiar with them than common claret. When attention is more general !y devoted to wine culture, we shall probabiy «ee wine as cheap here aa cider, and strychnine whisky and fighting brandy at a discount. Rxa rot Grassis.—Nearly all theexpermenta which have been made with artificial manure* for grasses. Indicate that, like wheat, barley, oats, Ac., the grasses proper—such aa timothy, rye-grias, etc—require a large amount of *mmonia. In the park at Rothamsted. which Mid has been in gras* for a great number of years, the crop frequently made into bay and removed from the land, manures containing much ammonia were very beneficent on the grasses, while those furnishing potash, soda, and other organic substances, had tha effect of causing clover and other leguminous to spring up and Sourish. This effect wag very marked, and the result fully sustain* the deductions made from direct experiments on the clover, wheat, barley, etc. W e are wtrranted in concluding that clover and other leguminous plants require a larger amount of alkalies in the soils, than wheat mid the grasses generally, while the latter requires manures rich in ammonia. Home experiments recently made in Scotland, by Thomas Ferguson, also favor this opinion. (.and recently seeded with rye grass and clover, was top dressed with various ventilizere. Those furnishing a free supply ot nitric acid, increased the rye 'Trass to such an extent “that the clover plant was choked, and came up very thin in the iftermath.” One hundred and twelve pounds of sulphate of ammonia, costing $4,50, gave an increase of one thousand five hundred ud twentyfour pounds of bay per acre; two hundred and twenty-four pounds of Peruvian guano, costing )6, an increase of one thousand two hundred and «ixty pounds; one hundred and twelve pounds nitrate of soda, costing $5, an increase ef one thousand five hnndiea and forty pounds; two hundred and eighty pounds of snper phosphate of lime, costing$6, an increase of pounds, while sulphate and muriate of potash gave an increase of only thirty pounds. in another field, on a two year old pasture, an application of five dollars’ worth of gnano “at least doubled the outlay in grass,” as also the sulphate of ammonia and nitrate of soda, all of which thickened the grass plants, besides giving them a quick growth.—Ger.nener Farmer. The following account of a premium croo of carrots is from the journnal of the New York State Agricultural Society: “The soil, sandy loam, and when the farm was purchased, in 1852, by father of applicant, the ground from which the carrots were taken was a worrhless swamp, of aboot three acres, throngfa which the cattle uld not pass—it being overtlowed spring and autumn. In the summer of l' < 52 it was drained—stone drains being laid, at a cost of $32 33 per acre. In the spring of 1853 it was plowed, and planted with corn, which yields'! 80 bushels per acre. Is the spring of 1854, £.0 horse cart loads of manure per acre, and sowed to carrots. In the spring of 1855, it was •owed again to carrots, without manure, and on one measured acre the yield waa 1,700 bushels. In the spring of 1856, one acre was surveyed, 30 horse cart loads of mixed hone and cow dang, and four barrels of bone dust spread and plowed in. Carrot seed was urilled in with a Scoth machine, that sows and rolls at the same timeusing half a pound of large orange, and one and half pounds of white carrot seed, in roars nine inches apart. On the third of July, passed through with a cultivator, and on the twelfth of July gave it the first weeing. July sixteenth, went through with the cultivator a second time, and on the eighteenth and nineteenth of August gave it a second weeding. The yield from the measured acre was 1,610 bushels of carrots, weighing 60 pounds to the bushel. The yield of white carrots was much greater than that of the orange. No difference aras perceived in the yield of those parts where the bone dost was, or was not applied. The cost of the crop, including interest on land '$8), was $ 49 21 The value of crop, at 20 cents per bushel 322 00
