Tl»e Oppoaition can not point to a ring!® froo Stata tbay bAT# addad to the Union, or a foot of Iran territory they bawa added to our National domain, ynt fonootb, tbay impertlDently claim to ba tba paculiar champions of "freedom.” Tbay oharga, also, that tba •laTO power is inovoasing in a grsatss ratio than that of "freedom," and that tba Democratic party are responsible tberafor. Let os briefly rater to tha facts in the cam fbr tbs proof of tbs utter absurdity of these Republican chnrgeeaod
profrwona.
At the organisation of tba Union, twalra of the thirteen Confaderated States recognised the institution of slavery. Now term are free and nr are slave 3tatea. This fact furniahaa no evidence of the increase of the " elava power any indebtedness to tha Opposition for tba change. Three Sutes were addad to tha Union under tba adminialraliou of WaaniJioTav — Vermont in 171)1 from the territory which belonged to New York; Kentucky in 1799 from Virginiataaritory, and Tennessee in 1796 from North Carolina territory. Virginia, a slave Stata, in 1784, ceded to the Umted Sutra tba North-waatara Territory from which five free States have bean formed. Ohio was admitted in 1609, Indiana in 1816, Illinois in 1818, Michigan in 18M, and Wlacoo- \ sin in 1846. all under Democratic administrations Maine, formed from the territory of M .ssarhueett*, was admitted at a free Stata in in 1830, when the Democratic party was in power. Ir)«iisiana Territory was purchased by Jcmaaow, the apoatie of Democracy, in 180,1. From thia territory the ?)utes of Iowa and Minnesota were formrd, the former was admitted as a free Stata in Hlo under tha administration of Pout, and the latter as a free Stata in |1858, under tha ad ministration of BcenattaM, over tba opposition and votes of the Republican members of Congress Kansas and Nebraska Territories are n part of the l.miaiana purchase, both of which will come into the Union as free States. Under the administration of Pour California, Utah and New Menieo were acquired, and California wan admitted as a Suta in i860, wber. tba Dsmocratie party wore dominant in Congress, and laat winter Oregon waa admitted as a fires Stata, over tW strenuous opposition of tba Rapnbficnna, by Demoeratic votes, under a Dsmocratie adminis-
tration.
And yet, with this record staring them In tba race, the Republican party are talking abent gatting up an organisation to “fight annw tba grant battle of freedom.** Their lova of froedom m n mere abstract philanthropy nevor practical. When Minasanta waa knoekiag for admimion in U&8 these “freedom shriakars** ware deaf, and only at the last session of Congress, if tbrv had had the power, they would have ehai out the frea State of Oregon Sines tba organisation of tha Union, «ur slave States havebscomn free by their own voluntary act, and under Democratic policy r6rwa free State* have bean added; jut tha Oppaaiiioo charge that the Democratic party is a pro eiarery party We claim that tha cratie party is neither a slavery nor an andslavery party. far as that quit ion is involved, it leaves its determination to tha people of tha several Stales, and to citizens of tha Territories wheo they come to organise Stefa governments. In Indiana we claim tha right to deter mine all .{ueatiou* of domestic policy, without outside intervention, as we may derm bent for our own welfare- And wha* we ask for < selves we are willing to concede to others. To uphold these rights of tha several Staten is ant of tha missions of tha Democratic party. Tba experience of threc-quarteco of a cento ms'.es evidence that tha principle works wall, and that it is founded in Tba faithful adherence In this doctrine is tha ligament which hinds tba confederated Staten together—it deoarced from tba Union will prove a rope of sand. We hare presented thaas tacts to utterly seomlans is the stereotyped charge of the Oppomrioa that tha Democratic is a pro-da-very party. BcnroBD Quauik—We find tee following in * fetter written from tab rity, by n dtixanaf Bedford, to tho Prt—gt. The letter referred to was not written by “tea man who owna tha Gasport quarry,” but by a person who has not a cent's interest in any quarry: Walking up Washington straot this «"g, I saw, about a hundred yards south of the street, a fine lot of limeotona—1 immediately recognized them as Bedford rock. They wore at the stone yard of Seott A Nicholson. The worktore told mo that tho Bedford limestone Is ter superior to any in the State. They formerly worked the Gosport stone, but sinca the Bedford quarries were opened they have thrown it aside entirely. The Goeport stone ia inferior in every respect— and above all, it has seams in it where it is liable to break. I leaned also from the workmen, that the puff of the Goeport quarry, which appeared in the State Sentinel among the chronicles of the peregrinations of the Penitentiary Committee, mitten by tie mmo who owna the Ooepert qnorry. In case it frills, the Journal ietiinatee that fare* will be resorted to, and that Judge Lynch will be invoked to interfere in the matter. In Boone and Putnam counties the people are arraying themselves re masse againat the granting of license, and such ia the strength and unanimity of public sentiment that it is believed that the traffic will be entirely stopped in these counties. I met this young genllian the otaer day ia the mosaic manufactory at tha Vatican, (for heie a most diligent sight aear.) sod was better pleased with his appaarunes than rumor bad prepared me to be. He belongs, too, to a higher than the average standard of manly beauty. His complexion is very fair, and a fresh, healthy color suffused his whole face, which wean a most attractive exprearion of boyish innocence. The other morning he ascended the dome of St. Peter's, and while there the Pope sent up some brqakteat for the party. When they came down they read upon a tablet, which had been placed in the wall of the temple, while they were above, the record of their visit. This state of tecta being cartified to the judges, they decided that the stakes were forfeited to Mr. King. We* are sorry that the contestants were not both in tiptop condition, for there will be no future opportunity to try their skill, as Mr. Duncan had resolved, before this match was made, that it should be his last, and he only agreed to it, that the tie between the two should be definitely de
