The annexed stanza, said to bo engraved on a tombstone at Oakham, in Surrey, 1736, is a -trained effort at panning, and can hardly be read withoat a smile: "The Lord mw yooi, I wan lopping sane wood. And so death lopped off me.” The author of the next, recorded in St. Bennet’s ^rare-yard, Paul’s Wharf, London, ought to have written oar mere bone-yard stanza, and then laid his poetic stylus away, to attempt no aiorr of the same kind: 'H-T- He* one l/Iire, r»nd »o Jforr thau he: <>’»r M-ir*. mnl Mort’ How can that be? Why owe Jfore. and no Mnre may well lie here alor.e. But here lies one More, and that's Jf>r« than one.” AA a model of brevity in sepulchral superscriptions, one found in St. Michael’s, Crooked l.ane, might well be imitated: “HerelyethfWiapt in day. The body of William Way I have oo more to say." But the one below is briefer still—penned to the meroery of a minister of the gospel, who actually shortened his days by bis unremitting dilligenoe in the discharge of pastoral duties: "Here Mr Joseph Allein lies. To (Jod and you a sacri«ce." Whether the doctrine taught in the following couplet be orthodox or not, we shall not take the time to prove. The two claaeee referred to will, of course, entertain very diverse views respecting it: • • Qod takes the good—too good on earth to stay. And leaves the t«ad—too bad to take away The next to which we treat the reader, if the perusal of cemetery poetry be a treat at all, is written on a very humble mechanic and his "better-half:” "On a Blacksmith and his wife— "In this cold bed here consummated are The second nuptials of this happy pair, Whom envious death once parted, but in rain. For now himself hath made them one again. Here welded in the grave; and ’tis but just. That they who are one flesh should be one dust. ' There is another, however, in Aston Church yard, Warwickshire, that refers far more significantly to the business of the sons of Vulcan: ■ On John Dowler, a blacksmith of Castle Brommteh, ITtC— "My <Oe&)« and Jktrmmtr lie reel ; nM, My Mime* too have lost their wind; My fire't extinct, my forge decay’d. And in the dust m y vice is laid. My coot is spen*, my iron'* gone. My naiis are drove, my work is done.’’ In a church yard at Suffolk, is found the following classic superscription: "Quod fuit esse: quod est; quod non foil esse quod esse, Isse quod est, non cst; quod non est, hoc erltesse." A proficient in the 'bad Latin, whose name is not given, translates it thus: "That which a being was, what is it, show. That being which it was, it is not now; To be what 'tis. is not to be, you see; That which now is not, shall a being be." Doubtless, there will always be distinctions between the living; but that there should be any invidious lines drawn between the dead is certainly "running the thing into the ground.” The following is an instance in point: "In Knlghtshridge chuv h yard, on a man who was too poor to be buried with hie re I at Io os in the church— • ‘Here I lie at the chancel door. A husband who lost the partner of bis life, thus records the fact, in the church yard of Griinstead, F.ssex: “A wife so true, there are but few. Quaint as it is, it contains a lesson which some of our modern church goer i might study with some profit. It reads as follows: "On a sleeper in the hounBbf Ood— "Here He* a man who every Sabbath day. In public worship slep: hi* time awar, lie might hare lieard of heavenly rest, but ch**e In his pew rather to indulge repose. The scene Is altered now- In vain he tries.
