Great good feeling pervades the Convention, and the prospect appears to be favorable for an amicable adjustment of all matters before tho Convention adjourns. A committee on time tables was appointed, but they could not report until 1 tho arrival of Mr. Scott, of the Pennsylvania Central Furniture—There is no city in the West where furniture of a superior quality can be had at more reasonable prices than in Indianapolis The business of manufacturing is carried on exten aively, and it is in the hands of men who have the capital and energy to turn the advantages possessed by the location to good account, both for themselves and for the prosperity of the city. The rapid progress of the Capital on the road to wealth and high civilization, has called for the establishment of warerooms where the most fashionab'e and elegant articles of house furnishing goods can be had in a sufficient variety to suit every taste. Such a room is that of John Ott, No. 117 west Washington street, directly opposite the State House- A walk through his splendid warerooms will well repay one for the time, if it is only to see tho perfection to which the cabinet business has been brought; and the lover of the beutiful is always charmed at proportions that harmonize with the lines of beauty. As a cabinet maker, Mr. Ott might successfully give a lesson to Kings and Presidents, who sometimes fail to glue together the conflicting elements they work with, without jarring upon » cultivated taste. He could at all events furnish them with lounges and ottomans, dressing bureaus, chairs, sofas and tables, which would add a luster to their stately homes. The furniture manufactured by Mr. Ott reflects great credit on the mechanical skill of our city, and the largo stock ever to be found at his rooms, from which a selection to suit each class and condition of society can be made, is a convenience duly appreciated by an extensive pa-

tronage.

Police Items.—The Mayor’s Court yesterday was guiltless of furnishing a single item. Justice Sullivan had Mrs. Bridget H&Uihan before him on a peace-warrant, sworn out by her brother-in-law, Jeremiah Hallihan. Mrs. Bridget, it appears, is a respectable woman, who keeps all her members under the control of her reason, except her tongue—and that unruly instrument, according to testimony, is a little the vilest that was ever let loose on a man. Her husband cannot live with her, and she has turned all the vials of her wrath on his brother. Her threats and violent disposition were fully proven, and she was bound over in a penalty of $100 to keep the peace. She refused to give bail, and went to jail uttering the most terrible threats against all connected with her arrest. A night in the

lock up may cool her.

Justice Fisher had Jim Burton, a good looking coal-black young nigger before him,on the complaint of Tom Crawspn, a red-headed and nearly white darkey, for an assault alleged to have been committed on him at a colored festival on Wednesday night. A trial of any sort among the Ethiopians is sure to bring out the whole force, either as witnesses or spectators. As we looked over the crowd in the court-room, and observed the indolent, good-for-nothing looks of a great majority of the old and young niggers there aesembled, we could not bat wish that some philanthropist would take the whole lot Sooth and sell them to some cotton planter, where they might be made useful. Tom could not sustain

his charge, and Jim was discharged.

Fiar—Last night about eight o’clock, s Are broke out in the row of frame bouses on the cor oer of Washington and Meridian streets, known as Grayden’a corner, nod in a few momenta after the alarm was given, the three buildings were wrapt in flames. The Relief fiogioe being la cloee proximity, was soon on the spot, and the others arrived as soon as could reasonably be ex pec ted, and with well directed streams of w.ter succeeded in subduing the "devouring element’’ before it bad quite eat up the lower stories. CT At a meeting of St. Patrick’s Society, held Wednesday evening, Mr P. Kirland was elected President; Dr. J. M. Lynch, Vice President; Mr D. J. Callahan, Secretary, and John Lynch, Treasurer. The Society will celebrate the 17th of March each year hereafter.

Bors Drowned.—We are informed by the Rgent of the Adams Express, that two boys, three or four years o.d, sons of Josi&h Reynolds and W illiam Whitesides, of Columbus, Indiana, were drowned yesterday afternoon in White river, near that place. The boys bad gone to the river to swim—got beyond their depth and were drowned O’ The Buffalo Republic says: "A well-known gentleman of this city was seen in a handsome two-horse sleigh in the street this morning with an elegantly dressed lady. On examination the lady proved to be his wife. We venture to say that anything similar has not occurred in the city

in the last ten years.’’

Indiana Central.—The Cincinnati Commercial says it is authorized to state that the means are secured for the change of width of road from Dayton to Indianapolis to Ohio guage. The Little Miami loans the amount asked of her, but makes no contract in regard to direction of traffic. Work on machinery and road-bed will commence to-day. (HTThe Evansville Journal states that a break occurred in the Wabash Canal, a little below Petersburg, on Sunday. On Monday the breach was about ten feet wide, and had washed to the depth of the bottom of the canal, so that the flood was inundating the neighboring fields. The breakage can not be repaired without drawing off all the water on the level, which is nearly twenty

miles long.

m m Attention, Grets.—-You are hereby notified to meet at the armory this (Friday) evening, at half-past seven o’clock, for drill and business. Every member is requested to attend. You are also ordered to appear at the armory to-morrow afternoon at two o’clock, in full dress uniform, with dress cap, for parade. By order E. HARTWELL, Commanding Officer.

ty Some of the streets in this city are in a wretched condition. Chuck-holes, that will take a wheel to the hub, and bounce the occupant of a wagon or carriage clear across the street, unless he or she holds on "like grim death to a dead nigger," are very numerous within one or two squares of Washington street, and opposite places where vacant lots rate at prices that would startle a man of limited means or circumscribed views. Would it not be a good idea for our Street Commissioner, until these holes are stopped, to imitate the fashion prevailing now at Leavenworth? There, we are told, it is very common to see signs posted up on some thoroughfare, with the ominous words: "No bottom here,” painted thereon in largo letters. Sad is the fate of the luckless wight, who ventures to drive his team heedless of the warning. It is the last seen,

alive, of his cattle.

Pike’s Peak.—Mr. Richard C. Holland returned from Leavenworth, Kansas, yesterday, having received a telegraphic dispatch, announcing the death of his father. He reports that city as crowded with emigrants for the gold fields, and the road aj. crowded with adventurers of all classes and kinds, some with trains with abundant supplies; some on horse-back or mule back; some with little hand-carts, with a few essentials, and a large number on foot, trusting altogether to their rifles and to chance. The late Leavenworth papers brought by Mr. Holland, speak encouragi^ly of the mines, and tell one story of wonderful luck in a few days' work; but as it may be the interest of the papers there, to give only the bright side of the picture, we forbear to quote from them. The price of passage by teams, from Leavenworth to the Peak, is $45 for one passenger, everything found, and 100 pounds of freight allowed, or $25 and the passenger find his own provisions. Phoinix Insurance Company—We 'ake the following remarks of the Phoenix Insurance Company from the Covington, Kentucky, Globe. R. J. Gatling is the Agent for this place, and if any of our readers have property to insure they certainly want a responsible company to in-
