[from the New York Dispatch ]

Are there me ElRlatmlnRe im Henven) An incident recently occurred on board a river steamer, which, for the honor of human nature, ve trust, ia not often witnessed in the world, and least of all in the United States. We omit the names and dates, as no good can conle of their .publicity, though we feel strongly tempted to give both the name and address of the chief actor in the scene, and would, but for her unoffending relatives, who, we are assured, feel her conduct as kee ly, and reprobate it as indignantly as we

do. The following are the facts:

About fifteen minutes before the appointed hour for the sailing of the boat, a young lady, with a countenance-of rare sweetness, who could not have been over seventeen or eighteen sum men at the utmost, and who, trom the diffidence in her manner, had probably never before seen the interior, hurriedly entered the ladies' cabin, and depositing a bat, shawl, and a few other articles of dress, in the first unoccupied berth, with-

camaiaam to Aid raoMmoaroT, rasa or ih.auk, drew to look after her baggage. Her youth, vis-

ible inexperience, shrinking modesty, winningness of feature, and recent acquaintance with

affliction, aa evidenced by her attire of deep mourning, attracted the attention of many of the ladies present, and awoke a general interest in her favor. It was obvious that the young lady had no male friend or escort, or she would have no need to see after the safety of her luggage; aud it was also plain that she was unacquainted with the usages of steamboat travel as not to know that it was against the rule to lay articles of any description in a berth, without having first obtained a ticket for such berth. All this was as distinctly manifest to those who had noticed her, as though it had been written in living letters upon her pale, smooth forehead. » Among others who had observed her, was a tall slender, well-dressed woman, in the neighborhood of forty, sitting at the center table, and who, for aught in her appearance, would have been mistaken anywhere fora well-bred lady. As the inexperienced maiden disappeared through the throng of new comers pressing into the cabin, this woman turned authoritatively to her maid, who was standing near, and in a voice whose chilling and deliberate measure told the kind of heart her husband, the head of a large a, d extensive dry goods jobbing house, was accustomed to clasp to his breast, said: “Jane, take these articles out of my berth, and throw them on the floor!” To at least one listener—our informant—this order was like a crushing, stinging blow! When, in a few minutes, the young lady reentered the cabin, and made her way through the throng to the berth, her anxiety at not being able to discover her things was painful. She glanced from berth to oerth, and then diffidently around, to see if any knew what she waa looking for, and could inform her where to find them. Two or three were looking, but being human in their natures, they had not the heart to tell her, by word or sign, what had happened, and on catching her eyes, blushingly averted theirs. The young girl knew not where to look, to whom to speak, or what to do. At length, perceiving the cabin chambermaid enter, her eyes lit up with hope, and she was stepping forward to inquire ot her, when hep foot pressed against something hard and ribbed. Pausing for an instant to look down she discovered that it wa* a bonnet flattened out of shape with the wires that had given’it form, projecting .one or two places out of the lining. She picked it up, and disturbed by an intruding thought, examined it a moment with an uneasy eye. The next instant he> pale neck, cheeks and forehead were diffused wits Indignant scarlet. The hat was her own! She comprehended *11, and yet could scarcely believe in so fodpytrous and onheard-of inhumanity. Her blue eyes swam yrith great swelling teafrs, and seemed, aad flodtyless felt, on the point of bursting; while for her heart—poor, young thing!—who may tell feelings.in that momen*! - - The shawl and other things lay scattered about and trampled upon in the same manner, though fortunately not irreparably injured, yet were so soiled and injured as to be unfit for use. Crowding passengers, even women, in the burry and cpnfusidn.oi lootipg up berths, are not wont to walk top gingerly.'and whatever lies under foot receives.the due proportion of the crash. Ciu-efolly gathering the articlesov.er her arms andiin hqr hands, the distressed maiden proceeded with them to the center table,'' and in a tone half plaintive, half reprQ^ptjfuJ, which, however, w a shortly barely audible for a stfqggljng sob, astt^d: No one answered for a time. At length the maid ^blushing to her temples, replied, that “You?” said the poor girl in mourning, in a voice that touched every heart but that of the creature that had given the order. “You?” “At my mistress’s bidding,” explained the maid. “The berth was hers.” The girl in mourning went round to where the mistress was sitting; the outrage had stung her young heart to the quick, and she wished to look the author of it in the eye—once-r-just once. The latter brazenly met her glance—without quailing, without blushing. Nay, stared at her with proud supercilious eyes, and did .not blush even for that. The injured girl regarded her attentively for a few moments, and then drew back with a cold chill, as though she had caught a glimpse of the malignaat spirit that abode in that fiightful organ ism, and that in its venom against whatever is beautiful and true, had suggested this tremendous

wrong.

“I am fatherless, motherless, friendless,” sard the girl, iter lips quivering with a sense of mingled anguish and outrage; “and except what I have on, these,” holding up the crushed things, “were the best and only ones I had in the world.

Oh, madam.”

Aid she moved away—poor, young, friendleas thing!—to a settee, when, sitting down and bowing her head upon her small, wan hand, ahe Wept

suck tears!

Let her weep, poor, stricken orphan—let her cry her heart out!—yes, weep tears of blood, till every particle, to the minutest atom of her tender life, shall have lost all likeness to the andean beast that, regardless of all ties, identitying her as a link in the great bond of human nature, deliberately heaped this stupendous outrage upon a

helpless, inexperienced sister.

Yes, let that poor, young thing weep, and let every individual tear be a living and separate witness—stem, faithful and accusing—till, all uniting in one solemn body, they shall form a mighty, terrifying host against her upstart wronger, when, dripping with the tears of other hearts, whom she has as ruthlessly braised and as deliberately trampled down, she shall come up to the bar for judgment in the great judgment

day!

attention was called to the circumstance, end be, seeing at once that the shallow water was approaching, or had actually been reached, ordered the weight to be taken off the breaks aqd allowed a large quantity of slack cable to go overboard. It must always remain a matter of doubt, however, whether the tailing off of the strain on and speed of the cable was observable at all until the top of the bank had been reached, £nd had this been the case it ia quite possible that the cable may have remained suspended upon some projecting points in the steep, and its insulation sooner become gradually injured by ito owu weight. This is, of course, only a probable conjecture, based upon the facts above stated. But, at the same time, it is impossible to account in any other way for the cable having become damaged since its submersion. Should the fault have originated in this way, not the least blame is attributable either to Sir Charles Bright, bis assistants, or the officers of the Agamnnnon, the occurrence being solely referable to the defective and uncertain method of ascertaining the speed of a ship at present in vogue in the royal navy. “The steep range above alluded to is often mentioned as a sloping bank; upon what ground it is difficult to say, for but two soundings were taken upon it, one at the bottom and another at thp top, and those two soundings, though only eight miles apart, show a difference in elevation of 7,200 feet. Of the nature of the intervening space no one can, of course, form any conjecture. Whether the sides of this submarine mountain (for it can be called nothing else) afe broken by ravines and precipitous cliffy, in the same way as the sides of the mountains on land are, nothing but a close and careful series of soundit.gscan ever determine. That such & series of soundings were not made by Commander Dayman at the point in question, when he sounded across the Atlantic from the Cyclops, was, we believe, due the prevalence of bad weather at the time. It is perfectly conclusive, according to the experiments Of Professor Thompson and Mr. Varley, that the water has reached the conducting wire at least one phee not less than 220 miles from the shore, and as the currents received from Newfoundland vary from one to two hundredth to only one-nine hundredth part of the strength they shonld be, it would be deceiving the public to state that the fhult is other than of the moat serious nature. But it is still believed possible by some, with more delicate instruments, and with proper concert at both ends of the line, to work through during some part of each day, provided the con dition of the wire becomes no worse. Negative currents of electricity are now used as much as possible in the transmission of signals, for were positive currents used, the exposed portion of the wire, by decomposing the salt water in contact with it, would be oxydized through in a very short time.”

Tfce Atlantic Cable—Ttae DlfHcnltr

Located an* Deocrlbed.

Experiments have been made at Valentin to ascertain where and what the difficulty with the Atlantic coble is—and these facts found. A correspondent of the London Tames describes them at length. We quote two interesting paragraphs: “These experiments would place the fault 220 statute miles from shore, or Somewhere upon the mountain range which divides the depths of the Atlantic from the codtparative shallow water leading from the Irish coast. Reference to logs end diaries kept by those on board the Agvmemaan dnnog the submerging operations show that this bank was crossed between four and five o'clock on the afternoon of the 3d of August, more than an hour before the expected time. It hid been intended by Charles Bright to allow a great quantity of slack cable to ran eat while crossing this point, in order that it might reach the bottom of all the inequalities which might exist there, undiscovered by the sounding line. Bat, for some unexplained cause, the Agamemnon throughout the whole cruise steamed ata greater speed than was registered by the log-line. Owingto this circumstance the bank was readied at least an hour before the expected time, £Ld fi, !iin^ tim SS r *f lTed 00
