Alleged Injuatlce to .*lary .Ylagdalen— Her l*erwonal Appearance The Philadelphia Journal says: A curious proof of the vigorous vitality of error, is seen in the prevalence of a mistake about the character of so famous a woman as the Magdalen. Mary of Magdala, whose miraculous cure is mentioned by Mark, and who there is no reason to believe waA an abindoned woman, is confounded with her who was a "sinner,” spoken of by Luke, and whose name was not given. Based on this error, an ideal Saint Magdalen was added to the calendar of the Catholic Church, and early in the thirteenth century several religious orders, whose members must have once led dissolute lives to entitle them to admission, were formed under her
protection

Every printer of eminence who has done any-’ij^s Agency,
thing to illustrate religious art, has chosen this • u fancied conversion as the subject for his pencil, and, accordingly, we have innumerable women, in different stages of nudity, with skulls and crowns of thorns, and disheveled hair and weeping eyes. Obviously, an artist can expend all his power in delineating the mingled passion and purpose that are expressed in the human face at such a crisis in life, and hence this is usually one of the greatest works of a man of genius. For instance, that of Ary Scheffer is a physiological study, of never-ending interest, and tells more than whole volumes could do. The work of Reubens, now on exhibition at Mr. Earle’s gallery, marks that point in woman’s life where, giving up the world and its treasures, she is looking, in an agony of woe and despair, for some thing higher and better. All she had, she spurns from her, but while behind is darkness she can not see light ahead. It is not an individual experience; it is not merely the suffering of the Magdalen; but it has the touch of nature which in is. - tie- whole world akin. A sister, standing by, smiles through her tears, complacently, as if she knew that the bitter lesson is auselul one. Toe pal n ling has an “idea,” and every thing is made accessory to that. The foot placed on the casket of jewels, the hands rei>e!!ing the past, the eyes averted from herself, and turned upward in despair, all contribute to give expression to the one thought. Of the execution it is useless to say much. The coloring is brilliant, the drawing not altogether faultless, the draper y stiff and with a picture look about it. The Magdalen is by no means npirituelle in her style of beauty, but somewhat coarse and voluptuous, as the women of Ru-
bens generally are.

TVT0 one remedy is louder called for by the necessities IN °f the American people than a sure and safe remedy for Fever and Ague Such a remedy we aie now enabled to offer, with a perfect certainty that it will eradicate the dise se, and with assurance, founded on proof, that harm can ari-e from its use in any quantity. That which protects from or prevents this disorder must be of immense service in the communities where it prevails. Prevention is better than cure, for the patient escapes the risk which he must run in violent attacks of this bale'"' distemper. This “Cork” expels the miasmatic poison Fbver sud Aorx from the system and prevents the dev opment of the disease, if taken on the first approach of its premonitory symptoms. It is not only.the best remedy ever yet discovered for this class of complaints, butsd-o the cheapest. The large quantity we supply for a dollar brings it within the reach of everybody ; and in bilious districts, where Fever and Aon* prevails, everybody should have it and use it freely both for cure and protection. It is hoped this.price will place it within the reach of all—the poor as well as the’ nch ' A great superiority of this remedy over any other ever discovered .for the spieedy and certain cure of Intermittent* is. that it contains no Quinine or. mineral, consequently it produces no quinism or other injurious effects whatever upon the 'constitution. Those cured by it are left as healthy as if they had never had the disea-e. Fe ver and ague is not alone the consequence of the miasmatic poison. A great variety of disorders aijge from its irritation, among which are Neuralgia, Rheumatism, Gnut, Headache, Blindness, Toothache, Earache, Catarrh, Asthma. Palpitation, Painful Affection of the Spleen, Hysterics, Pain in the Bowels, Colic, Paralysis, and derangem ntof the Stomach, all of which, when originating In this cause, put on the intermittent type,or become period! cal. This ‘-Cure” expels the poison from the blood, and consequently cures them all Mike. It is an invaluable protection to immigrants and persons traveling or temporarily residing in the malarious districts. If taken occasionally or daily while exposed to the inflection, that flriJL be excreted from the system, and cannot accumulate in sufficient quantity to ripen into disease. Hence it is even more valorble for protection than care,- and few will ever suffer from Intennittents, if they avail themselves of the protection this remedy affoids. *ep27
