Mr. HiMk the gre*i French trMrelar la Cbb*, coo cedes that hit polite coeotr/mea ate outdone by the Chinese. He uyi that nowhere elee than in China could men be heard exchanging corn* piimenta about a coffin. In ererr country people forbear to apeak of title mournful object destined to contain the remeine of a relation or friend. It is prepared in secret, out of aightof the world, and when death enter* the honse the coffin ia intro

duced by stealth to avoid aggravating the grief of a heart-broken family. The Chinese view the matter in a totally different light. In their eyee a joffin is an article of the first necessity to the dead, and of taste and luxury to tha living. In the gi eat towns they are displayed with mgant decorations, In magnificent shops, and carefully painted, varmahed and poiiahed, in order to allure the passers-by, and induce them to buy. People in easy circumstances always, in fact, provide themselves beforehand with one to their fancy, and until the time arrives (or lying down ia it, keep it in the house as s handsome piece of fur* nicurc, of which the utility is not immediate, but which can not fall to be a consoling and agreeable object in a handsomely-decorated apartment. The coffin, above all, is considered an excellent method for children in a decent rank to show the intention of their filial piety to the autborf of their being. It is a great consolation to a son to be able to purchase a coffin for an old father or mother, and make a solemn offering of it when they least expect it. When we love, we are always ingenious in contriving agreeable surprises. If a person is not sufficiently favored by fortune to keep a coffin ready, care is still taken not to wait till the last moment, that the dying man, before saluting the world, as they say in China, may have the satisfaction of casting a glanco at bis last abode Thus, when a patient is given over, if be has the luck to be surrounded by loving friends, they never fail to buy him a coffin
and to put it by the side of his bed. ^ ^
A Pickpocket’* Explanation* “When I saw you go into the banking-house, I backed myself at two to one that l should relieve you of your money. When I saw you come out with the money in your left coat-tail, instead of buttoned up in a breast pocket, the odds rose five to one. I knew it was in your left coat-tail
because you kept your hand there." “And,” I said impatiently, “I I
out again; that I can swear to.”
“You did not take it out for a long time, sir,” replied Mr. Daddies, applauding moderately; “you gave me a great deal of anxietv, I must confess, but you did take it out at last.” “Where?” cried I, “where? If I did before I
got home. I’ll be hanged.”
“Don’t say that, sir,” replied my new acquaintance, rather severely; “don’t use an expression of that kiul, whatever you do. You stopped at a print shop on the west side of Templebar, and then my last hope began to expire, for a few steps more would have taken you into the Spider’s Territory, and my chances would have van-
ished.”
"Why did you not cut the bottom of my pocket?” I asked, intensely interested. “Because you would have missed the weight
of the coin,” explained Mr. Daddies. “Nothing
remained for me but to try the fly dodge.” “A fly, Mr. Daddies, explain yourself, I saw
no flv.”
“You felt it, though, Mr. Brown, if you remem ber, upon the left cheek, and you took your hand out of your pocket to remove it.” "I see it all, now.” “That was it,” assented Mr. Thomas Daddies, in conclusion, “and a very neat thing it was, though I say it.”—Dickens' Household Words. A Picture ol Mohammed. The following is a pen portrait of the famous founder of Mohammedanism: Slightly above the middle size, his figure, though square, w&s handsome and commanding, the chest broad and open, the bones and framework largo, the joints well knit together. His neck was long and finely molded. The head, unusually large, gave space for a broad and noble brow. The hair thick, jet-black, and slightly curling, fell down over his ears; the eye brows were arched and joined. The countenance thin, but ruddy. His large eyes, intensely black and piercing, received additional luster from their long, dark eyelashes. The nose was high, and •lightly aquiline, but fine, and at the end attenuated. The teeth were far apart. A long, black, bushy heard, reaching to the breast, added manliness and presence. His expression was pensive and contemplative. The face beamed with intelligence, though something of the sensuous also might be there discerned. The skin of his body was clear and soft; the only hair that met the ev was a fine, thin line which ran down from tn neck toward the navel. His broad back leaned slightly forward as he walked; £nd his step was hasty, yet sharp and decided, like that of one rapidly descending a declivity. There was something unsettled in hisblod shot eye, which refused to rest upon its object. When he turned toward you, it was never partially, but with the whole
body.
Ice C’ro.xin. As ice cream is a delicacy which most people are fond of, a receipt for making it will no doubt prove acceptable. To One quart of milk take four eggs; beat them well, then stir them in the milk, sweeten very sweet with refined sugar; then set it on the stove and stir until scalding hot. Care must be taken that it does not boil. Take it off and let it stand until cold; flavor with lemon, vanilla, or anything you choose. The rind of fresh lemons grated is far superior to the extract. Those wlio have uot patent freezers will find a tiu pail with a cover answers very well. Chop your ice fine, and to each peck of ice put one peck of coarse salt; then throw some of your ice into a basket, set iu your pail, aud fill in the ice; pack it closely around the sides of the pail; then take a wash-tub and lay some sticks upon it; then set jour basket upon them, so that when the water melts it will run out. The oftener it U stirred the nicer the cream will be. When you are not stir ring ft, keep it covered with a blanket.—Rural Nne Yorker.
