Puhlie meeting of the Business Men of Indinnajpolis at the Connell Chamber, Wednesday. 2l)th Inst, The meeting came to order at 4 o’clock, r. m. Andrew Wallace was called to the Chair, and Barton D. Jones, of the Journal, and Charles P. Bay miller, of the Sentinel, were appointed Secretaries. The Chairman stated the object of the meeting to be the taking of step* for the establishment of wholesale dry goods houses in the city. The purpose was to induce thorough going men of capital in the city to engage in the jobbing business. If we could induce gentlemen at home to embark in the business, it was our duty to encourage them. Citizens at home hud, of course, a preference over gentleman from abroad. The end sought was the concentration of trade here in all its departments. Several gentlemen being called upon, stated that it was the universal complaint of merchants throughout the State that, although they could buy their groceries, boots, shoes, hardware, Ac., In Indianapolis, they could not buy dry goods. They were, therefore, compelled to go to other cities to lay in full supplies. These were the statements of Messrs. Stewart, Roberts and others. Mr. Taylor said it was manifest that Indianapolis was destined to become a large commercial, iu well as manul'acturiug city. We had every facility to make this one of the foremost cities in the West. It was the center of radiating railroads, and was in the heart of a great and prosperous State, and surrounded by a vast and fertile region. One step towards this great end was the establishment of Wholesale Dry Goods Houses. The President, oa motion, appointed the following gentlemen a committee to draft resolutions to be reported at a subsequent meeting, viz : Messrs. Stewart, Roberts, Root, McKeman, and Elliott. Also a corresponding committee to communicate with gentlemen of other cities in this regard,
viz:
Messrs. Drum, Taylor, and Root. It was resolved that the (Oinmittee to draft resolutions meet at the store of J. T. Drum, West Washington street, on Friday next, at 4 r. m., and that this meeting adjourn to convene At the Connell Chamber at night on the same day. The Political Toxt>Book or Encyclopedia. We have received a copy of the above named valuable work from the author, and we fully concur in the following noUce of it by the Washington Union. It contains a large amount of valuable information upon the leading political topics of the day in a convenient and referable shape, and should be in the hands of all who are called npon to express opinions thereupon. It is a compendium of facts upon those questions, alphabetically arranged, and which, to arrive at in original documents, would require a great deal of labor and time. The Advertisement will be found in another column : We desire to call particular Attention to the advertisement of Mr. M. W. Cluskey, in another column of our paper, concerning his new political Text Book, now offered for sale. Mr. Cluske kindly placed upon our table a copy of his wori as soon as it was issued from the press. We have had ample time to examine it, ami several occa ■ions to refer to it lor information. We unhesitatingly pronounce it one of the most convenient and useful books of reference that we have ever met with. It will be recollected that Mr. Cluskey prepared a book for the lost Presidential campaign, which he called the Democratic Electoral HandBook, and which was used to great advantage in the canvass throughout the country. Indeed, the great popularity and utility of his first work, ami the constant calls for it, ever since the campaign has been ended, have suggested the plan and the preparation of this second one. His last work is very complete. He has re-arranged the whole matter of the first work, thrown it into the encyclopedia form, added an immense amount of matter, made a copious index to the work, by which anything wanted may be found in a moment, with clear and ample explanatory notes of his own by which everything obscure is rendered plain and intelligible.' To the politician, the editor, and all who desire information on the leading party measures and topics of the times, this book will be found of the greatest convenience and value. The author has performed his task with decided judgment and ability, and we trust that he will meet with a corresponding remuneration for his labor. The CAi.uorc.—This singular instrument, the music of which can, it is said, be heard at the distance of ten miles, will enter the city, drawn by an extraordinary team of forty horses, at the head of Nixon A Kemp’s Mammoth Circus, on the 8th of August. A sensation may be expected on the occasion. The show wjll undoubtedly be a good one, as the company numbers some of the best names in the business. No better clown than Kemp ever set foot inside of a ring. Previous to the afternoon performance a wonderful feat of wire walking, by the celebrated Madame DeBach, who ascends a wire from the ground up outside the pavilion to the top of the center pole, will take place. This performance can be witnessed without charge by all who are on the grounds at half past one o'clock.

XT The cornice is nearly finished on the splendid buildings of Scberman and Vgjen, west Washington street, south side. The plasterers have about finished work iu the lower rooms and they will shortly be ready for occupancy. (XT In our Terpsichorean announcement yesterday, with respect to the Academy in Military Hall, East Washington street, we spoke of Prof. Foole instead of Prof. Norr. It was a misnomer merely, and not a substitution of one distinguished gentleman for another, as the public probably perfectly well understood. Call on Prof. Nott and purcliase tickets to his soirees at $1 each, admitting a lady and gentleman.
D” The Journal takes exceptions to our Reporter’s account in the Council proceedings with regard to a bill for printing rendered from that office on Saturday night last. It admits the material fact stated, viz.: that there was a reduction on it of 7 per cent., and that is enough. Whether Mr. Locke is on the Municipal Finance Committee or not, makes not the slightest difference in the world. The Journal over valued its work, so the Council thought, and the Council was very
likely right.
Accident to Miss Carrie D. Filkins.—We regret to learn from the New Albany Tribune, of the .30th inst., that Miss Carrie D. Filkius was seriously injured on the Friday previous by being “thrown upon a pile of stones.” This is the second time, the Tribune says, that a similar accident has happened to Miss Fiikins. We sincerely hope that nothing serious may grow out of it —hid. Sentinel. These stones should have been removed after the first accident. It was a singular co-incidenee though to fall twice on the same stones.—Ohio

Syrian Wheat.—A gentleman from Alabama received from the Patent Office some spring wheat from the “Farm of Abraham,” at the foot of Mount Carmel, in the Holy L ind, which he sowed during the past spring. It came to maturity in seven weeks, producing a large full head, with a berry in every respect equal to the original. This wheat is reputed to ripen in Syria in sixty days from sowing. It will thus be seen that our climate hastened its period of maturity eleven
days.

Neuralgic Affections, highly beneficial, and
This is a purely vegetable compound, prepared dn strictly scientific principles, after the manner of tbe celebrated Holland Prof. Boerhave. Because of ite great success in most of tbe European States, its introduction into the U. States was intended more especially for those of our fatherland scattered here and there over the face of this mighty country. Meeting with great success among them, I now offer it to the American public, knowing that iu truly wonderful medical virtues must be acknowledged. ft U particularly recommended to those persons whose constitutions may have been impaired by the continuous use of ardent spirits, or other forms of dissipation. Generally instantaneous in effect, it finds its way directly to the seatj life, thrilling and quickening every nerve, raising the drooping spirits, and, in fact, infusing new health and vigor In the
system.
NOTICE. Whoever expects to find s universal panacea in this beverage will le disappointed; hut to tho sick, weak and low spirited, it will proves grateful aromatic cordial, possessed of singular remedial properties. CAUTION. The great popularity of this delightful aroma has Induced many imitations, which the public should guard against purchariur.
