tory, considered in all its bearings, than that of the "Pocket District,” and we have a mrich better claim for the selection of a United State* Senator from among us. Tho vacancy to be filled is that of Judge Pettit. Ho served through but a part of a term, and all precedent would aasign to him a re-election. It matters not that a year has expired nince the expiration of his term; no successor has been appointed, and he yot enjoys the entire confidence of hi* party and of tho people of the £tate. This alone should secure his *election, and if anything i* to be done for service, the Democracy of the 8th may well claim the re-
ward.
We await the result, however, with but little anxiety, believing a Democratic Legislature will act wisely and for the public good, even though our wishes should (aa we think they will not) be disregarded. And we commend onr brethren of tho Pocket to ponHos* themselves with all commendable patience, and ho careful by neither word or deed to demonatate such weakness ns may l»e cause of regret hereafter. Wo cannot close without noticing tho unjust accusations made by the Kvansvillo Enquirer, against the State Sentinel, of improper interference in regard to Senator and Trustee. The over anxiety of the editor ha* led him him to see what was not to be seen in the columns of tho Sentinel. waa not for a moment to be supposed that the practice of all these old and experienced Sen- I utors wa* founded upon any erroncou* theory. Tho aspersions which tho President cast upon the people of the Northern Slate* who voted fur the Republican ticket, seem to have been dictated by an impotent sort of r.igo, worthy of no importance, in themselves considered, but coming a* they do, ex catJtclru, from tbe highest executive officer in tho na- j
