While these pageants were being prepared, Mr. Bute Treasurer Gibson, who seemed ” spiling ” to make a speech, mounted a chair on the balcony of the Phillips House, and volunteered a considerable oration. He let into the " Slaveocracy ” with hia usual fierce vehemence, and rounded up by an earnest assurance that the American people owed it to themselves and to the unfortunate negroes to endow them with equal political rights and social privileges—all of which seemed vastly

Mr. Fillmore’s letter accepting the indorsement of the United Americans has been pub

“My position before tba country is well known, admitting neither of disguise nor equivocation. I am the candidate of the American party, but I see nothing inconsistent with that position, or dishonorable either to myself or those who may support me in receiving the votes of all those who, knowing my position, prefer to cast them for roe; and I feel peculiarly nattered where it ie done, as in yonr case, on

this signal proof of confidence.

peciftlly to our “ German and Irish brethren.’ It does sound a little queer to hear honest patriot*, who, eighteen months since, were “third degree members of Know Nothing Councils,’’ making such pathetic appeals to their dear foreign brethren, to vote for the eater of grasshopper gathered in Rocky Mountain snows, in mid-winter. Such is political consistency.— Such is the consistency of Mr. W. H. Gif-son and Mr. deems H. Baker, the one Treasurer, the other Secretary of the State of Ohio. But they do pull the wool over tho eyes of the

Dutch aud Irish most famously.

THE TORCHLIGHT TROCKSHION

Was a fi/.xle. It was exactly eight minutes in passing the Phillips House, the participants marching two abreast. One-half, at least, were small boys. That’s so. The only attractive feature was Menter's superb brass band — That was followed by crowds, wherever its splendid music was heard. The transparencies were of rin inferior character, and the mottoes and devices not strikingly expressive.

THE PVROTtOrilC DISPLAY

Was likewise a fizale in the true sense of the term. That, however, was partially attributable to the unpropitious weather. The lateness of tho hour at which the exhibition waa made, (11 P. M.) was also another unfavorable circumstance. Tho people donbtless were la

tigued.

SKCAPITL’LATION.

“I have nothing lo extenuate or set down aught in malice.” If there had been 50,000 people here I should have reported it so. Not enjoying the Republican faculty of amplification and exaggeration, T am constrained to come down ton contemplation of actual facts, and so I compute the number of persons who participated in the demonstration yesterday, at between 20,(Kit) and 25,000 souls—say 25,000 in order “to keep peace in Ihe family.” People, however, diuer according to temperament.— One lymphatic gentleman expresses his honest belief that between 15,000 ana 20,000 would be a generous estimate. A very enthusiastic Republican says there whs “ 75,000 at the least calculation.” Others range from 1H.OOO to

HO,000.

As near as 1 could arrive at the facts, only one hundred and twenty railway cars came in from all points. Conceding 90'pnseeugers to each car, we have the number 10,800 arriving by railroad. Any man of common sense, however, knows that freight cars will not carry 75 people, pack them densely as you will—pas senger cars, which are much larger, are made to seat but 60. Of those enumerated, some 3,000 came from Indiana, and are therefore not voters in this State. Those who arrived 00 horseback, in wagons, and by other conveyances, were not so easily computed. In fact, we can only guess at the number, I deem it an honest judgment to set them down in numbers equaling those which came by railroad. True, 3,500 came from Greene county alone, and 300 from Cincinnati; but the few counties bordering on Montgomery, and the country townships of Montgouisry, altogether did not more than double the above figures. To all these add resident Daytonians, and the number 25,000 is attained by making a big jump at it. The interesting fact at issue is, wa* the Republican Mass Meeting at Dayton a failure?— It was partially so, u must bo evident when we consider the tiemeadous efforts made to secure the attendance of a mighty throng Posters and advert isements had been paraded all over this State and iu Indiana for weeks, and a gathering of 75,000 to 100,000 was generally counted upon These facts, now potent to the public, are apt to disappoint somebody, but it can’t be helped. So mote it be.
