In the latter part of the year 1852, the Doctor, having been defeated for the Democratic nomination for Anditor of State, lecame a candidate for the Democratic nomination for T. 8. Senator. The Covington Friend, then edited by Soi.o* TrBMAR,noticed the fact, and added that, although the Doctor was well qualified, certain Free Soil notions of his would very justly rule him out—that the man in the moor,” stood a better chance to 1* elected U. 8. To this, the Doctor replied as follows, in a letter, the precise date of which we have lost, but which will l>e found reprinted in a late numberof the Friend. Is the Doctor in favor of allowing ‘‘ the colonists themselves, whoever they may be, who shall settle the Territory,” to determine those matters now ? The Doctor then held to the doctrine that if the people favored the establishment of slavery in the State, it would be "the July <f Congress to acquiesce.” Now he contends that it is the duty of Ooni»reis not to admit into the Union as a State, any Territory recognizing slavery. Has the principle changed, or has the Doctor gone astray ? Let the people decide. The Doctor is now cheek by jowl with the Abolitioniits and Quakers of the P.urnt District. Hu now regards them as the salt of the earth, sad he no doubt counts on getting the vote of every man of them. Let ns see what ho thought of them nine years ago. Speaking of the candidates for Congress in the Wayne district, the Goshen Democrat
of June 'J, 1847, said :
The district is so wedded to Federalism and so full of treason, Abolitonists and Quakers, that there is little prospect of success. There

This was a strong bid, but it wouldn’t win. The plague spot of Abolitionism had begun to appear upon him, and the Democracy defended him until his political health might be restored. But neither the salutary appliances of time, repose from public duties, r.or the Compromises of 185<>, arrested the progress of the disease. It seized upon his vitals. Will the Doctor deny that he is now Frcesoiier. Nay, if Hale and Julia* are Abolitionists, can he deny that he is an Abolitionist ? But the Doctor has the impudence to say that he has not changed. In 1847 he “strenuously opposed the Wiimot proviso,” now he "strenuously advocates it,” and stigmatizes the friends of popular sovereignty, as slave-ites and dough-faces. Out upon such hollow hypocrisy. Was the Doctor in earnest about anything ? Let the i

There never was go much enthusiasm in the Keystone State for a nomination as exist* now in the National Democratic party. Mr. Buchanan will undoubtedly carry the State by • very large majoriiy—largcrthan any candidate for the Presidency ever had, save, possibly, General Jackson. In Kentucky we take the following paragraph from the Louisville Times : Within the past week there have been twen-ty-three withdrawals from the Know Nothing Codge, at Rochester, Butler (.ountv, Kentucky. It is said that Buchanan and Breckinridge will gain one hun'red rotes in Woodford county in November. In Logan county, the stronghold of Know Notbingism, the old line Whigs will go for Bitch and Breck almost to a man. The Madison (Wis.) in answer to the inquiry as to how Wisconsin will vote for President, says : It isonr honest btlief, based upon an observation of the course of Wisconsin politics through a number ol years, and a tolerable good acquaintance with influences in various loo.dities, that the Democratic ticket will carry this State by a majority of thousands. Among the reasons for his belief the editor of the Argus states the fact that in November, 1854, the Black Bcpublicans carried the State by a majority of 9,000. At a judicial election in the spring of 1855, the majority was reduced to 4,400. In the fall of 1855, at the list election, the Democrats carried the State l»y a majority of 3,000 on State officers. In conclusion, the Argus

Lastly, the Republicans themselves have no hopes of success in this State. They some times hazard a claim to it, but do it in a way that shows their utter want of confidence in the claim. taken the weapon by the blade instead of the handle, and can harm no one so much as himself. His opinions now are diametrically opposite to his opinions heretofore. He has given better reasons against Abolitionism than he can ever give in its favor—yet he has undertaken to fight the battles of Abolitionism, not only against his former friends, but against his own opinions in his better days. The love of office has become his consuming passion. It sways him to and | fro, like a tavern sign in the wintry winds.— Hoping to ride into place upon some erratic heave of the billows of popular sentiment, be is all things to all men—a mere tidewaiter, looking out for some eccentric vascillation of the people to re invest him with lost honors and emoluments.
