Kootnf of tho sum Central Coxnittee. Punuaot to notice heretofore given, the Democratic State Central Committee met in thU city on Wedneiday the 16th inst. The great question as to the eligibility of Colonel Joke C. Walker, us a candidate for the office of Lieut Governor of Indiana, being before the Committee, from various sources, the Committee, by resolution informed CoL Walker thereof, end requested an interview with him, whieh wm promptly responded to on hie part, when an interchange of conreraation took place, of the most harmonious character. After this the Committee presented a written statement to Col. Walkkb, requesting him, in view of the absence of record evidence of his age, to withdraw from the canvass as a candidate. The Colonel received the communication in spirit of kindness, and asked time until the next day to deliberate thereon, which the Committee granted. On Thursday morning the reply of Col. Walkkr was presented to the Committee, in which he, for the reasons therein contained, very politely, and in a spirit of patriotic devotion to his principles and of liberal chivalry, unhesitatingly re signed his candidacy. After the declination of Col. Walker was formally Accepted, the Committee proceeded to dll the vacancy thereby created; whereupon the Hon. Abram A. Hammond, of Vigo county, was chosen as the candidate for Lieutenant Governor. A committee was appointed to wait upon Judge Hammond to in form him of the result, and to ascertain whether he would or would not accept the proffered honor. In a short time the committee returned with Judge H., who, in his usual urbane manner, returned his thanks for the partiality thus shown him, and accepted the nomination, promising his best exerionafor tbe success of the whole Demo-
cratic ticket
The best of feeling seemed to pervade tbe Democracy on the announcement of the result Judge Hammond was formerly an "old Whig," but has not acted with that party since 1852, but on his return from California, in 1854, voted the Democratic State ticket, and l£ak acted and voted with the Democracy since that period. He was a delegate to the Democratic State Convention from the county of Vigo on the 8th of January last, and attended its deliberations. Judge Hammond is a good speaker, a gentleman and a popular man. His selection, under the circumstances, we hope will give general satisfaction, as we have no doubt that he will be well reeeived by tho people who know him as an honest man and a reliable politician. The official proceedings will be given tomorrow iu detail/ and will fully explain themselvc^ Moral Suasion. A correspondent of the Boston Journal writes from Newbury port, as follows : "The temperance cause is receiving considerable attention here. Meetings are held weekly in one of our public halls. Every Sunday evening lectures are given by the clergymen of the different religious denominations in this city. By the [articular request of his friends, Mr. Gough has accepted an invitation to deliver a lecture on this subject, in the City Hall, in tho course of a few' weeks. Mr. Gough spent the early part of his life in Newburyport. He has a large circle of friends and acquaintances here, who will bt pleased to listen to his powerful eloquence in behalf of this glorious cause. Having attended most of the lectures which have been given here, I have noticed the curious fact that roost of the speakers have said but little in relation to the present liquor law, but verv wisely, in my opinion, adopt the principles of "moral suasion." These I consider the only true grounds upon which to meet the great evils of intemperance. It is true that the present law has net been enforced in this city—but is not the same true of two-thirds of the cities and large towns in this Commonw'ealth ?' Hence I consider it a strong argument that the law is a "dead letter," and that the true friends of temperance cannot expect to aid their caaee by peering radical enactments. However, it b not my intention to argue this subject I will state one fact: By actual count it b ascertained that there are one hundred places in thb city where liquor can he obtained ; some estimate the number as high as one hundred and fifty. Thb fact should help fill the ranks of the friends in the cause

But it is not for the immortal soul these babbling philanthropists—these noisy, -roistering reverends—these pert misses challenge the attention of tbe world, but merely to subserve the end of cunning, selfish ambition—to gain party ]X)wer—to feed the fire of fanaticism ; to do this the}- would immerse the Bible in blood while declarin^their garments ns white as wool, and yet be as deaf to the shriek of real suffering humanity as the adder whose slimy course they follow.—Boston Post. The Triumph Complete.—The Democratic triumph in the State is complete. The returns come in better and better. Since the State election of 1847 the opposition party has not been so thoroughly routed. We have certainly carried eight-tenths of the Supervisors, and our present impression is that the Democratic popular majority will not be less than six, thousand! and it is very
likely to reach seven thousand !
This is the first gun of the Presidential campaign from the North-west. The glorious sound booms over the Union, and carries gladness Co tens of thousands of patriotic hearts. It announces tho great fact that the reaction is fairly under way, and that its progress is irresistible.—Detroit Free Press, IH/t

had asked him. But Mr. B. is a modest man, and be proves it by intimating that some such candidate ms Freemont ought to be nominated ! There is a woman in the lunatic asylum out West, who thinks that the Reman Catholics are trying to build a cathedral in her stomach, and gum to bed every night with a club to keep off the papists. She ought to he admitted Into the Know Nothing Ledge without a ballot. The New York Courier and Enquirer, an old Native American paper, and with a leaning to Black "BepubhoaB" Know Nothing-
ism, says :
The money brought into the country fn the pockets of emigrants is computed by tens of millions annually; and the value of the emigrants themselves in peopling the country, subduing the forest, cultivating the prairie, and opening the mine, is hardly to be reckoned in
dollars and cents.
Certain Know Nothing editors have recently made the discovery that Gov. Wise of Virginia is [insane. Judging from the tone of the articles occompanying this charge, The Atlanta Intelligencer is inclined to think that the charge itself proceeded from the madness of those who made it. The "Republican” majority in the Ohio Legislature have passed a bill to amend the habeas corbns act. The Cincinnatti Eqmrer
says:
If we understand its provisions correctly, it gives to Abolitionists the right of replevying from service, by a process from the State courts which brings them as well as the Marshal before it. The Sheriff is empowered to take the slaves from the Marshal’s jurisdiction by force, if lie resists. The law is a clear invasion upon the sovereign right of the United States, and will be resented as such by the General Goycrniuent. Its only effects and tendency will be to bring Ohio in nullification collision with the authorities at Washington. It is a dishonest effort to evade upon the part of the State, its solemn compact upon entering the Union, to deliver up to their owners fugitives from ser-
via>.
The National Committee of the Black Republican” party have issued a call fora National Convention, but it is remarkable that the name "Republican” occurs nowhere in the call. "The people, without regard to past political differences or divisions,"-are invented be "the National Committee appointed by the Pittsburgh Convention," to meet and recommend candidates for the Presidency and Vice Presidency, but under what banner or party name is not mentioned. What does it mean ? Is the name "Republican” already become unavailable ? We pause for
a reply.
A Washington correspondent of the Boston Courier says that there is a movement to bring forward Mr. Orr of South Carolina, as the Democratic candidate for the Presidency. A very able communication in the Richmond Enquirer of Tuesdayjlast, recommends Robert M. T. Hunter of Virginia, for President. !. There has been a Black " Republican " meeting at Goose Creek, Loudon County, Virginia. Admirable and appropriate name. The municipal election held in Portsmouth, Va., on Saturday last, resulted in the choice of the entire Democratic ticket, including Mayor, and the whole City Council. Portsmouth and Norfolk used to be the very hot beds of Know-
Nothingisin.
Some of the prominent Southern members of Congress are urging a anion of the Democracy on Senator Fitzpatrick of Alabama, for the Democratic nomination for Vice-President. ( -V A Virginia Democratic paper understands the Connecticut delegation to Cincinnati to be
favorable to Rusk and Toucey.
The Rochester Union (Soft) says it will support Mr. Dickinson, if nominated for the
Presidency.
The Rochester Advertiser, speaking of the late declaration of the Chicago limes in favor
of Mr. Dickinson, says :

Senator Douglas, also a candidate for the Pres-

is all the friends of this gentlemen in New York
idency, this kindly mention of Mr. Dickinson
of temperance.”
Thk Pkospkct,—The immense gains of the Democrats in our large cities and towns and in those States where elections hare beott held this Spring, although opposed by a combination of Know Nothings, Republicans, and Abolitionists, show very clearly which way the wind blows. A year ago, in each of tbs States alloded to, viz: Rhode Island, Kaw Hampshire, and Connecticut, the Democrats weraLflefeated by an overwhelm ing majority, ’mis year the combination against them baa been more extealye «* complete than before, yet in each case they press very closely epoa tho hods of their opponenta. Until hat yearthere had long bean an Ahotitloe or Fkee Boil party, whieh neither aided with the Domoaralt nor with the Whigs, But, at the bat two elections, they have fmtonuxed lovingly with the other opnoDseti ef Pmaeuntj; rad the consequence
have a right to expect, and if his Soft enemies in that State can derive any comfort .from this opinion, as expressed by the Times, we certainly have no disposition to disturb them iu the en-
joyment of it.
A secret "Republican" State organization has just been exposed at Penn Yan. The Grand President is Wm. C. Parsons, of Penn Yra, and the Grand Secretary is J. Yan Voorish, of Rochester. Col. Fremont is likely to become the leading candidate of the "Republican” party. Blair and Grekly are said to be for him. Arms will not yield to the gown on this occasion, and Justice McLean is In danger of
being ruled out.
The N. Y. Herald’s Washington correspondent gives the following, which, if carrieu out, wiirleavtfthe Northern members of the convention but little to do iu nominating a President: A secret circular has been sent to tho Democrats of the Southern States, proposing a union of all tbe Southern delegates to the Nad Convention, before leaving for Cinctnupon one man as their candidate for 1 Presidency. It is urged that such a step is n dered necessary under the present state of things, for Southern security against Northern fanaticism, and that the safety at the south consists in the choice of some person for tbe Preaideucy on whom they can with certainty rely.

ard bowels, so that all thouglit it lir.possible for me to I've through another chill. The doctors, too, did all they could for me, but thought I must die. Nothing did menny goo.1 until i got Rhodes’ Fever and Ague Cure, which at once relieved mcofthe distress and intu sea at the stomach, and pain in my head ami bowels,
and produced a permanent cure in a short time.”
H M. Conki in says: “ I had been taking medicine of as good a doctor as we have in our county, and taken any quantity of quinine aiid specifics, without any good result, from 25tli August to 17th December. Bntseein" how nicely it o|rerated on my brother, I got a bottle of RHODES’ FEVER AN D AGUE CURE, which effected
a permanent cure by using two-thirds of a ImtUe.”
s M. Conklin was not here, but both the other brothers say Ids case was the same H. .M’s. I sold the medicine to both the same day, and tlie cure was as speedy from the same small quantiy, and l might so
specify. Yours with respect,
A. HUNTINGTON.
The above speaks for itself. Good proof as it is, it is "f no better tenor than the vast number of like certificates 1 have already published, and tho still greater amount that is continually pouring in to me. One thing more. Last year I had occasion to caution the Pubie in these words:— “ I notice one firm who have taken one of roy general circulars, substituted tlie. name ol their nostrum for my medicine, and then with brazen impudence end their pamphi. t with (he exclamation, flsrt the proprietors oi any other meditiifi) say as much if he dare,’ ” &c. Now l take pleasure in saying tiiat the caution referred to the same “ Dr. Christie’s Ague Balsam ” that is mentioned in the above certificate. There are several other industrious people who are applying to their poisonous trash all that 1 publish about my Fever and AgueCure, or Antidote to Malaria, except the Certificates of Cures, and tlie Certificate of the celebrated chemist, D. James K. Chilton, of N V . in favor oliU perfetly HARMLESS CHAR ACTED, which is attached to every 1m>U!o. ibeso will always serve to distinguish my medicine from imitations. JAS. A.
