Ifartford,

The Prsiideaey—Mr. Bright.

'I he Boone County Pioneer, in placing the name of Hon. J. D. Bright at the head of ite columns,as a candidate for the President, says: “We do this, not because wo do uot believe there are other good men iu the Democratic party—men whose names stand prominently before the public iu connection with that office—who poBscae equal energy, capacity, and integrity, and would fill the Execntivo chair with dignity and honor to the nation and to themselves ; but because we believe that n large majority of tbe Democratic party, not only of tbs State of Indiana, but of the great, growing, and populous North-west, prefer Mr. Bright to any other mao. They think that it U time that this section of the Union was represented iu the Presidential mansion—that it is due their wealth, their population, their growing greatness, aod their untiring devotion to the cause of Democracy; and they believe their noble Senator would prove a worthy representative. He is well known, not only to the people of Indiana, who have often placed their confidence in him, and never found that confidence misplaced, but to the people of the whole country, as a man of sterling integrity, of ability and energy, second to none, and of nerve unflinching—one who would steadily carry out the principles of the constitution in the administration of the affairs of the general government, uninfluenced by sectional or religious prejudices, and yielding not one “iota” to faction. Quo who is ever ready to battle for the doctrines of our fathers and

ventioc, have approved tbe anti Banks course pursued by Solomon G. Haven in Congress, and have appointed him their delegate to the Philadelphia National Council, of the 22d of February, naming also, Mr. Fillmore as their

candidate for the Presidency.

The Know Nothings iu the Cincinnati District have also held a meeting and passed resolutions sustaining Mr. Scott Harrison, in bis scattering votes! Are the K. N.’s the >t »catltrin^J ,, party—or what do these things

(£7“ A dispatch from Chicago, dated January 17th, says: The State Nominating Convention of the Democrats of Iowa, in session at Iowa City, have obosen Geo. W. McCleary aa I be Democratic candidate for Secretary of State; James Pollard, Auditor; George Paul, Trca snrer; and James Baker, Attorney General. Four Presidential electors were nominated, and eight delegates appointed to the Cincinnati Convention. It is understood that the delegates are pledged to support Douglas. [From the Indians Bute Juurnal.] The Greencaatle Banner, speaking of the nominees of the Democratic Convention, says of John C. Walker : “John (J. Walker, the candidate for Lieut. Governor, is a small potato kind of afellow, both physically and intellectually. He is from Laportc county, but for tbe la»t four or five mouths editor of the Htutc Sentinel. He is a young man, 26 years old, and even if elected, is ineligible to the office, as the tomtitution of the State requires that ofiicer to he 90. He tome times goes by the name pf Colonel, s name assnmed by himself, probably from the fact that be once Killed a man in Ohio in 11 drunken

brawl.”

Although we mean to do all in onr power to beat Mr. Walker, and entertain very sanguine hopes of succeeding, yet we would rather be beaten than conquer by the influence of such unjust and ungenerous statements an the above. Tbo Lafayotte Journal, with characteristic generosity, puts in an emphatic contradiction of t he above, in which

we heartily concur:

says it is the form or features and not the body or substance of the dead that should be

preserved, and adds:

“ The mummiea of Egypt are quarried for fuel, aud, whether those of the Pharaohs, their wives, their priests, or their slaves, are split open aud chopped up with the same indifference as so many pine logs. The gams and balsams used in embalming them have made them a good substitute for bituminous coal; and thus the very means employed to preserve them have become the active agents for their dissipation. So it is when materials of coffins have a high marked value, they are then seized as concealed treasure, and their contents cait out as rubbish. Like heroes in the Eastern hemisphere, the descendants of N&nco (Japoe were sometimes, if not always, entombed in such, and with considerable treasures besides in vessels of gold and silver; heuce wo learn how the Spanish conquerors sought foi*, often found, and as often

plundered rich Incan sepulchres.” Hints for Housekeepers.

The attractiveness of a room does uot depend 011 the richness and expense of ite furniture, but ou the taste which selects and arranges it. A city parlor is no model for one in the country;— that which is suitable for one may be entirely inappropriate to the other. Elegant furniture, rich curtains, showy mirrors, and velvet carpets belong to those who have nothing pleasant to
