That we regard the traffic in intoxicating liquor for a beverage, as a great moral and political . evil, and desire at all hazzards, that such traffic shall be utterly abolismed. We therefore instruct the nominees of this Convention, to sustain in all proper ways, the passage of a law, rendering all such traffic illegal, and affixing such constitutional penalties, forfeitures, seizures, and confiscations, as will effectually produce that result. Democrats have been charged with extending Catholicism, because they recognize the doctrine of otir constitution, that no religioua test for office should be established, and that all men have the right to worship God according to their own consciences—-becanae they are not willing to proscribe Catholics or any other denomination—becanse they are not ftartial to any one, but are in favor of granting equal privileges to all without regard to their religions opinions. They have been charged with a war upon the clergy, and the Math odist Church in particular, becanae they have replied to the attacks made upon their party and principles by a class of preacher*, though they have confined their replies and comments to those preachers who attacked them, and though they have expressly excepted the church and the faith, anil the great mass of the clergy from the application of their censure. Because they have dared to protest against the conduct of a few rank, impendent and partisan preachers, they have been condemned, when it is known that harder and more bitter things

than have been said by those preachers against them.
