We copy from the Dayton Jfopwe the following in reference to the lata demonstration in favor of the Nebraska hill at Columbus: There eras a tremendous gathering of the Democrats of Columbus and Franklin county, on Tuesday evening in reaponae to the call of the Democratic Central Caaamittee. This call, as our read os will recollect, was addressed to the friends of the measure now before Congress, known as the Nebraska Bill. NoMy did tire Democracy iff old Franklin re^ spond to it. “Never before,” says the Statesman, “was there such an enthusiastic eut pouring of the Democracy in Columbus. Several hundred went away who could not get in. It reminded us of the fall of 185*. The hall was densely filled, both by thu citizens of Columbus and our Democratic follow citizens from the country. It rejoiced our heart to see such earnestness and interest manifested in the great Democratic principle of popular sovreignty, fixed in the Nebraska MIL Th were a few wings at the end of the hall, who put up a renegade Democrat to make a disturbance; hut the good tempo- of the meeting gave him rope, and he hung himself up, as a spectacle for pity and shame. The harmony, the moral effect, the Democratic influence of the meeting were not disturbed. The attempted disturbance was a sort of aid to CoL Med ary. It aroused the old fire in him and to his ‘Teaser" we are indebted for some of the best strokes of ,his sledge-hammer
logic.”
With our cotemporary of the Statesman, “we are glad of this demonstration at. Ohio's capital, because Ohio was sought to be misrepresented by Chase and Giddinga, at the federal city on this subject. It was given out that her Democracy was not steadfast to the national creed; that they were to be led by such abolitionists as Chase and Wade! Let the slant!or from this moment be never repeated.”

0^~The American correspondent of the London Times, in a letter to that peper, says that the whole United States Navy, if it could ever be got to sea at all, could be demolished in twenty minutes by a French or English squadron; and that if war wa break eut, any martime power could, in three weeks’ time, sail to any American harbor, and burn its buildings to the ground. The Times, in commenting on this letter, remarks th«t “no reasonable man would think any mors lightly of the martime power of the American Union from the circumstances here disclosed. Twenty years ago, our own ports wen spoken of in almost wioflar tas What is it, then that contributes so effectually to American reputation, and even carries it through exposures which would ether prove destructive? Simply, tka nmvsrml conviction that all the tiemanta of atrai are in reality there in abundance. And what gives this conviction? Simply the knowledge that til the sees of theglebe an co vend with American shipping, and that though the national arsenals may not contain the for a frigate, the yards; riven and harfaen of the ceuntry could turn out in twelve mMitka or even in as many weeks, such as an as nevar yet crasaed the ueoan. Only the day before yastwday, we published a dMitUd anumsration of thenumber of jfcmu-ekqpe which had been launched at the port of New York alone, up to the first day of the primnt year, and these figures actually showed a total of 66, with an aggregate tonnage of 106,000— or in other words, 66 steamers, averaging wards of 1,600 tens each. Than can never ba a question about the true naval powar of a State like this."
