remmrt 10 T OT 0t iDott’impTM.I^ proportions of the grandest, the must liberal and the mort glunoua republic the world has yet known. Aa members of a pAty founded by statesmen like Jefferson, and nurtured by political suns like Jackson there ts ho subiect upon which we should dwell with warmer and more patriotic feeling than the paouaaa rtVE VKaTTHH of the American character. We need not care what the political skeptic may tell us; we know that in the glass of reason, he professes to point to this very element a* that from which we bave most to fear. Dot what cause is it of alarm, lhat the people of this country have determined that our flag shall wave over every acre ou this continent!—that the march of empire cannot be stayed for an hour ?—that our agriculrural population are even more ag^reseive than out armies ?—that, finally, a ten years’ peace would con- < B** r as effectually as the sword, the institntious politi cal and social, by which we are surrounded? Our beautiful republic is cemented, not divided, by the water* of the Mississippi. Let its territory expand, and let our chief end be to strenethen it* proportions by indulging that community ol sentiment which na tore seems to have designed, as our distinguishing char-
ftctexiatic.
Conservative and progressive are terms not the arbitrary birth #f the lexicographer, but bavin" actual parallels iu the history of our country. From the revolution until this hour, two distinct and well defined political organizations have, in turn, shared the honor of exercising the functions, and wielding the destinies of this government. The orb of conservatism seem* to have attained its meridian higbt, and to be now in the wane of tU existence. The star of proeress appears destined to‘enioy a ’•longer day.” It has only risen above the rubb _h of arirtocracv and despotism, and ita brightest glory ia reserved for the future and more brilliant eras of our country A democratic and aa anti democratic party, if we may judge from all experience, are indispensable to the well being of every republic. The American Union, almost without interruption, from ita birth until the present hour, haa been in the hands of the great American Democratic Party. Every poliUcal doctrine which haa received the sanction of time, every measure which is ia operation under thi* government, our army, navy one-half of our territory—these are the legitimate off spring of this party. A* publisher of a Review, 1 shall adhere to the “ an cient land marks” of our party until their rejection or modification shall appear indispensable to a due observance of the growing and changing interests of ’he country. The following democratic doctrines will be advocated :— opposition to monopolies of every description ; The granting, by government, of a portion of the public domain to every actnal settler, witho t regard to creed or clime; The complete separation, not only in name, but ia fact, of church and state ; A tariff only for revenue—to bo exchanged, whenever the people shall be willing, for a system of free-
trade ;
The election of all officers of the government, from the highest to the lowest, by direct vote of the people; The encouragement of every earnest effort amont; men to subvert despotism, and establish republican or democratic government; A strict construction of tne Constitution, content plating the retention by etch State, of every power not expressly delegated to the General Goverhment; Opposition to tbe appropriation of the national funds to aystemsof internal improvement merely sectional in their character; A steady retnrn to tbe ‘-constitutional currency” or th* country; Absolute accountability of representatives of every character to the authority creating them : Finally, the best government, usually that which does not attempt to confer positive bleseing* upon the people, but which suffers them to take care of them-
selves.
A considerable portion of each number of tbe Re view will be devoted to literary and scientific subjects. Several, among Use mort aceompliahed scholars and distinguished politicians in the country, will be regular contributors,to its columns. To each number will be prefixed a finely engraved portrait of some prominent American, accompanied by a biographical sketch. The first or second number will contain a portrait and biography of the lamented Howard of Indiana, which a.one will be worth to all that would preserve a tribute to tbe memary of that distinguished Indianian, the subscription price of the first volume. The Review will he printed upon paper of a fine quality in long primer type—two columns to the page. It will contain about 100 pages, and will be publishtxl monthly, at Ihe rate of .;$3j]0 per year, payable in ad
vance.
Any one sending ten subscribers will be furnished the Review on* year. All communications to be addressed to GEORGE P BUELL, Editor and Publisher Western Democrat!r Review. Indianapolis. Indiana. August 27. 1851
