known, a few days since, that John Freeman had been arrested a* a fugitive slave, sad waa likely to be remanded to the masttr fro® whom ho fled years ago, the sympathies of the whole eoaamamty were arena*d ia his behalf. He has long been a rwidest here, •ad is a member of the Prsebyteriaw church. He had married a wife, aad accamnlated property, aad has always been a worthy, respertsble, and usefa) man He hac many friends, a** inch a man—white or black—always will have; and they immediately went to work ia br* behalf. Talented counsel were employed to defend him, and vehement appeals were made upon oor itreet* to arouse sympathy for him The most phlegmatic, even while declaring that the Saw most be enforced, acknowledged that it was hard that a man who had been free for so many years, aad had ac^cired a home and a family, shoald be taken from all these blessings which his iadwstry and ■vorth had earned, and saddenly be made a bondman for Ufo, withoat hope of freedom or domestic comfort again. Aad now that the trial has been postponed to enable Freeman to procure evidence of bis freedom, if he can, a note is circulating for*signature# promcnog to pay $1600 to the Branch Bank, at Indianapolis, for the purpose of raising money to procure his release from jail until the time fixed for his trial; and it is signed by a large number of wealthy usd influential eiti-
«ens, who, no doubt, will raise the money.
All this is right. Sympathy for the unfortunate us among man's noblest and best fealtngs, if it partakes not of that morbid character that leads to the violation of law and
jactics
As our citinens pass along Washington
itreet, they can see another case, which, it teems to us, is not altogether unworthy of sympathy. An old, white-headed man—one who has apparently almost ma has allotted course of three score vears aad ten—palsied, tad bent from age and disease, aaay be seen every day, beneath the hot, broiling wan, engaged ia the severest ami most toilsome manual labor As we have seen him wipe, with trembling hand, the sweat and dust from hie jged brow, we have thought that his was a case equally as hard, usd equally requiring the sympathy—we doubt not he would scorn, so leag an he can work, the aid—of the benevolent. Yet not a whisper » heard of the hcfdacm of It's case, aad he toile on—this old man feeble, and bent, and worn, hopelessly, for a bare subsistence Necessity is to bim a master as inexorable add cruel as the bcactless one who, ia fiction, whipped nether grey-haired man to death. Why hare we not papers in circulation to raise, by contributions from the wealthy and benevolent, $1600, or even a smaller sum, for this poor, old white laborer? H» family may need the common necessaries of life—probably do, or the feeble sire and husband would not be obliged thus to go forth to toil in his old age but probably not a word of inquiry has been made. No one has raised a voice of sympathy in his behalf- probably because he has given his complaints no tongue It might be profitable to compare, in the mind, the old age of this mm—cheerless, hopeless, povertystricken, and labor-driven—with the old age of Freeman, should he be taken back as a
dare, to his old home in Kentucky. We but suggest the subject, with thw in-
quiry—Is not that system of society, which requires, from age and disease, bitter and un-
relenting toil to procure the means of daily 1 rjpHIS DAY
