WAsitixGTON, November 21.—[Spccial.] —At the White House, according to the court chronicles, the spirit of mental culture and artistic improvement dominates the leisure moments of the first lady of the land. Under Mrs. Harrison's patronage a class for French instruction composed of fashionable ladies has been proposed, and had an experimental lesson at the White House to-day under the instruction of a French professor. Mrs. Clarkson, who is a member of the ela&s, is quite enthusiastic, and expects that the court ladies of the republic will be quite expert linguists in another season. A congenial occupation in the line of her tastes has been taken up by Mrs. Harrison by inviting a professor of Polish lineage, but latterly of Chicago aud Indianapolis, to come to Washington and open a class for instruction in painting on china and porcelain. A class of twenty-five pupils has been formed nmon^ the ladies. On the list are Mrs. Harrison, the Misses Morton, daughters of the Vice President, and Mis* Wanamaker.
