candidates for the position aud will be made between them.
It is
that dozens of others are in the same predicament. There is considerable speculation being indulged in regarding the chances of the various candidates. But one man has been found who declares ho will be appointed. So sanguine is the applicant that he is willing to wager on hit chances. However, the slate is not made up and if his name is oil it now, it is such an easy matter to erase it.
Collector Throop will have an opportunity of displaying his political handiwork in making the appointments. Nick Filbeck said he would be given an opportunity to show what kind of a politician ho reallv is. Mr. Throop came here a stranger, lie entered immediately upon his career as a student, learning the iutrinicies of local politics, lie has had for tutors some of the oldest and wisest, heads of the party, lie is a patient listener, and many tales have been carried to his ears of the contending factions in the political arena. What the collector has.not [been apprized of perhaps isn't worth I knowing.
Applications for positions are all in: the collector has met all of the applicants and is now meeting their friends, lie has manv calls from persons who come to urge the appointment of some personal friend or other.

Going to the door he threatened tho man who a^in assaulted the doctor and after a struggle gained possession of the knife with which he stabbed the doctor repeatedly in the face and almost severed tho thumb from the right, hand. The doctor ran down the street pursued by his assailant and succeeded in reaching a drug store, where his wounds were dressed. The |H)lice are after the assailant who escaped in the darkness.
