The great American bottoms, a tract, of lowlands twenty miles in extant, which has nearly always been overflowed by the freshets of the Mississippi river, has always caused the Big Four considerable trouble in the past. The bottoms are between Wann and Alton, and sometimes the tracks were covered with water there for miles, I^ast year the Bee line began the work of remedying this drawback by raising the grade four feet for a distance of twenty miles. The outlay of time and money was something enormous, but the results gained were gratifying and the road was at last freed from danger in that localitv. Since the Bee line-Big Four consolidation the track has been still further improved until now the Big Four has one of the best roadbeds of any of the roads running into St. I ,ou is.
The Illinois Central officials have not yet made public what they propose to dr in the matter of a general manager/' succeed K. T. Jeff'ery. One thing is to be certain, however and that is Mal General John McNulta will not be aV pointed, an Ol lilt) I"' tiv

Man's life is but a game of cards. First,. it is crib-age. Next, he tries to go it alone" at a sort of "cut, shuttle and deal" pace. Then he "gambols" on the green, N'ext he.
