1 A gentleman on Main street this uiorning told a story about a friend of his who had a penchant for wearing old-fashioned jboots with sharp, high heels. "He wouldn't wear any other kind of boots," said the spokesman, "and one day, his

1 the halcyon days of yore "Chestnuts!" had a great run in this country. Everybody said "Chestnuts!" from the urchin on the street to the heiress in the oriental parlor. But now, alas the expressive exclamation languishes in innocuous desuetude. Sometimes a seedy, solemn-eyed man says "Chestnuts!" wearily, as if he wanted to die: and sometimes one sees the word in the newspapers but whenever it is heard it sounds like an echo from ages dead, and whenever it is seen in print it reminds one of things weird and uncanny. To 1h* "in the swim" at this present day, one must know how to recite, with as much frequence and euphony as possible, the Iteautiful line, "In the soup." What a !eautifu! sjeetftc]e it suggests! Imagine a man literally in the soup!
"Slather a remarkable incidentoccurred on the Vandalia line a few months ago," remarked a mil road man this morning. Proceeding to the narration of his story, he said: "I was going over to Indianapolis ii Wash. Johnston's train. When wt reached (Jlendale, just east of this city, a lady got on the train and she was followed into the coach by a small dog. The brakenuin objected to the dog's ritnng and fired him out at a window. The train pulled out and continued on its journey for many miles, making its regular stops, and the woman and her dog were quite forgotten by the passen-
gem.
Suddenlv the whistle blew for a

gather her chattels together for the purpose of alighting. When the train stop|ed she got on and to the amazement of everybody her little dog sprang from under the train and began to hop and skip about her. The canine had performed the marvellous feat of riding all the wav from (ilendale on the trucks.'1

The afena was the sptice circumscribed by a glass bell and upon letting a mouse and a scorpion loose in it, a grand display of maneuvering ensued, the mou&e flying to cite off his opponent's tail, which terminates in a stmg, and the scorpion watching for an opportunity to strike hira with it. Should the former succeed in his first object, the latter falls a prey but if stung the mouse swells up and dies in convulsions. However, the mouse is generally the victor.
Bqual generalship is required iu the en gagement with the centipede, which defends itself with two small uippers, placed at either side of its moutb, near the poison bags. One of our men found a large tarantula on his shoulder one morning when be awoke, and it suffered itself to be removed without doing him any injury. He brought it to me, as an amateur, and accordingly 1 placed It under the bell with one of my hardest bitten mice. It immediately reared itself on its hinder legs, remained motionless in this posture, wbiie the mouse ran around the bell, evidently unwilling to face its new antagonist. This 0011 tinned a short time and then, as if uudcr the influence of an irresistible fascination, the mouse jumped suddenly into the arms of the tarantula, which quickly seized him with two nippers, resembiiui? the claws of a cat, and situated at either side of the head, and with such deadly effect that the little quadruped instantly swelled up and burst. I next let loose two or three mice at a time on the tarantula, but thev all shared the same fate.
