trumpet and a very pretty young woman accompanied by a little boy. She smiled at intervals on the boy, and showed her pretty teeth in a bewitching way. All at once the old man, in the way peculiar to so many deaf people who do not know how to'modulate their voices, said in tones so loud as to be audible all over the car, "I only paid $5 for my upier teeth. What dicl yours cost?"
To say that the pretty woman was mad is putting it mildly. She flounced around with a flush of* anger blazing in her cheeks, and signaled the conductor to let her out at the next crossing.—Cincinnati Times-Star. »,
AN HALLUCINATION.
MURRAY WAS NOT IN EMPORIA—THAT SISTER THE VICTIM OF A DELUSION.
Careful investigation confirms Murray's innocence of the crime with which he is charged by the Kansas sister. He is perfectly willing to go to Emporia and face the deluded female in the matter which so nearly effects his reputation. He was unquestionably on duty in this city at the very time he is accused of having been in Kansas. Many persons will swear to this statement
All day an officer from Einporia|has been expected to arrive in this city, and had he come Murray would doubtless have had a hearing and been given a chance to vindicate himself. Several of Murray's friends—persons who saw him here*at the time it is charged he was away—assembled at the city building this afternoon to testify in his behalf. The Kansas officer did*not show up.
HE WAS AN AMATEUR.
citizen who owns and runs several fancy farms was sitting in his office, yesterday when a trampish-looking fellow, with his right thumb wound up in a rag, climbed the stairs and asked for a quarter. "Why should 1 give you a quarter?" demanded the agriculturist. "Because I can't work." "When diil you work last?" "All last week." "What were you doing?" "1 lusking corn. That's what made my thumb sore." "Oh, that's it? Husking corn, eh? Well, here's your quarter."
The man had been gone half an hour when a sudden thought came to the farmer. Then he leaped up with the exclamation: "By Gosh, but 1 believe he lied! Of course, he did! We haven't even cut our corn vet!"—Detroit Free Press.
