About six months ago a man who had the appearance of a farmer, called at Bome of oar leading mills, and gave the propriators to understand that he had several hundred bushels of wheat to dispose of. The grain buyers of course, entered into negotiation for the purchase of the wheat, and after agreements were made, and the next day specified for the delivery of the grain the ft) farmer would insinuate that the banks were closed, and that hfe needed Ave or six dollars, to purchase groceries, would the gentleman pliase let htm have that amount on account: \es certainly. Mr. Brown (for he had several aliases) would take the cash and that was the last of Mr. Brown. He ptayed this game on Wm. Paddock, R. L. Thompson and Kidder Bros: complaint was made and a description of the man given to the Police and they have been on the lookout for him ever since

Saturday uight, Officers Whitfield and and Goodpasture, went into a boarding house near the Union Depot, and saw a man that answered the description: He was arrested and taken to the station, and parties sent for identify him. This morning lie was indicted for obtaining money under false pretenses he plead guilty, and was sentenced to the PenitenI :ary for two years.

The State Attorney and Police should be congratulated upon their poweis to stt the machine going when they put their shoulder to the wheel. i»

A large and demonstrative audience assembled at the Temperance Hall, corner of Ohio and Fifth street last Sunday, to hear the arguments of the Prohibitionist?, and help on the good work.

The meeting was addressed by Wm. and Geo. Holmes, who made stirring appeals in behalf, of temperance. Perhaps the most eloquent address of the evening was delivered by the gifted Miss Flannigan, who has no peer in this line, except the silver, tonguea Leadville orator. The Mills family 10—strong—10 count tliem— 10—furnished the vocal and instrumental music. The audience theu listened to short speeches by Luke Whitcsides and B. Holmes, after which the boys had a chance to escort the ladies home. Twelve Hereon*, singular number is'nt it? But we don't wish to en gender any remarks by speaking this way but the objective case view is that these ^twelve placed their names upon a parchment, and swore never, never, never, so help them Heaven, to drink another drop of liquor. People are constantly changing their homes from East to West and from North to South or vice verta, in search of a healthy State. If they would learn to be contented, and to use the celebrated Kid-ney-Wort when sick they would be much better off. The whole system can be kept in a healthy state by this simple but effectual remedy. See large adv. irt.'

Bielas' comet divided into two parts in 1846, aud iu 1852 those parts were 250,000,000 miles apart, and had entirely disappeared by 1866.

Coggia's comet was discovered in ln74. It is nou-periodical and was 133,000,000 miles from the snn when discovered. In July of that year it was within 62,000,000 miles of both earth and snn, and its tail was computed to be 12,000,000 miles in length.

Donati's comet, discovered in 1858, had tali 40,000,000 miles long, and its main Inxly very nearly collided with Venus. Although supposed to lie vaporous, this comet was calculated by M. Faye to have the weight of a sea 327 feet deep and 40,000 square miles in extent.

Halley's comet has lieen identified as ideujical with the comets of 1531, 1607, 10G6 aud 1223. Its reappearance is prognosticated ibr 1912.

Gucke's comet possess«i no tail, usually In 1848, however, it presented two tails, one toward aud one from the snn.

Lexell's, or "tue lost comet/' was canght or entangled among tne satellites of Jupiter in 1770, reappeared in 1779, again became entangled, and has .not been seen since.

iu.\r.

The superstitious of all times arid" nations have regarded the appearance of comets with dread, as letng omens of disaster. The spectroscope fails to show their chemical composition. It was shown by Schiapavilli, in 1872, that cometsare sometimes connected with meteoric showers, and his discovery has been indorsed by noted astronomers.

Lycho Brahe discovered that comets are extraneous to our atmosphere, and Newton lliat they are .subjected to the same principle which guidts the planets.
