Aujentowh, Pa., Feb. 10.—On account of a misinterpretation of a telegraphic order received by the engineer of a freight train, a collision oceured between that train and a passenger, due here at 8:17 o'clock. The engineer had orders to enter the siding below the station, but missunderstood the telegram: A dense fog prevailed at the time, which was partially the cause of the seriousness of the fatal accident.

Charles Goodyear began his experiments to discover the secret of controlling indiarubber. and the means of imparting to it durability rmder all temperatures and conditions, in the'winter of 1834-35. He was subjected to the privations of pinching poverty, and the discouragements of illhealtfc, and did not attain the success for which he so patiently labored, until accident led to it in tbe spring of 1839. As all questions in dispute were settled by the adoption of this programme, the proceeding promises to be a very dull one. The' Senate Committed'on Education and labor seem determined not to allow the passage at this Bbssion' of the" resolu,t*.on tf tarry in^o ieiffect i4ie. eight hour law. The subject was. discussed yesteiv day, and a majority of the committee voted to postpone its consideration indefinitely. Be it said to the credit of Senator Bruce that he entered his dissent to'^postponement. It will be'remembcrfrd that the House last session passed this resolution by an. almost vnan imous vote, and it would have passed the Senate had it not been for the objection urged by Senator Withers, of Virginia.
I was told this morning, and by one who should knbvf, that tlie opposition to Sta&Iey Mathews, a? nominee for a Judge ship on tht Supreme Bench, would not be great, whenever the Senate voted on the confirmation. The point upon which the most stress is laid, is his 'course in the Senate, on Thurman's Pacific Railroad bill. But though the Supreme Court .afterward sustained the bill, the Judges were not unanimous ia so doing, three of them declaring it,1 as Mathews had done, unconstitutional. So it would seem unfair to argue the unsoundness of Mathews ns a lawyer, and his consequent unfitness for the Bench, from his course on that bpi. It is uot to be supposed, says my infoimant, that Thurman or Edmunds would oppose confirmation, solely on the ground of a difference of opinion betwoeu the nominees and themselves, even if the nominee stood alone in his opinion. Yet their oppositiont-if indeed, they oppose confirmation, as reported—cannot otherwise be explained. It is believed the nom inatlon will be reported by the Judiciary Committee favorably, and voted on within a week, unless questions as to confirming certain New York nominations shall prevent action on all important cases be fore the committee.
I'he "Monroe Doctrine," so long an aV stractloh, and so little understock by pep pie generally, lias been most thoroughly inquired into during this session, and seems likely to have Congressional endorsement, and to be put in such form that not only our own people, but those of all civilised countries will know what it is. It ia a singular fact that we, are no more prepared nOw, so far as a Navy f# concerned, to enforce the doctrine, than we were when iri was enunciated by President Monroe. KifOX, 'Ms/
