Which Means the Ladies Who Appeared at Oriental Hall Last Night.
"0! isn't it crowded 1" was the exclamation of'the ladies, as thev were ushered into Oriental Hall last night, where the Knights of Father Mathew were holding a fair for the benefit of that organization. And, indeed, It was crowded the people were jammed, crammcd and packed in there, so that it was an almost an impossibility to navigate. The ladies were out in force and empioved themselves in industriously soliciting what thev called "chances, -bpt if anyone could see a chance there he was a sage. One beautiful d*m0i*dU, with her bangs bu'lt upon the Bernhardt style of architecture, inserted her elbow (by accident of course Oh! yes rather violently into the ribs of the "Scoopcr," and then said: "Excuse me, sir. Oh! will you please take a "chance" on that beautiful cradle which you see placed over thereV
I'had been trying to work off that pun. on her, since she introduced the coal sub ject, but little recked the consequences. The young lady was picked up in an tinconscious condition and a physician was Immediately sent for. Up to the hour of going to press her condition had not visl-

The teachers have concluded that pupils after having studied spelling, penmanship, grammar and composition, should be able to compose and write a respectable examination paper, and have decided to mark accordingly.
NORMAL NOTES.
"rtie students of the Normal School, and many citizens, have been very highly entertained this last week by the lectures given by Mr. A. Bronson Alcott. He gave four lectures and they were all lis-1 tened too attentively by a large audience. It is a means of culture, as well as enjoy ment to be with a person so highly cultured as he. We hope to hear more of tbe same kind from the same kind of a man. Our worthv president has the hearty thanks of all for bringing such talent within our reach
Last evening the Eclectric So ciety beldits regular meeting. The programme was good, and the hall was filled with attentive listeners. Their next meeting is two weeks from last evening. All are invited to attend.

DAILY NEWS
Possesses many advantages as a daily
newspaper over all other competitors cir
culated in the City of Terre liaute.--TiiK
NEWS is modern newspaper in the full
sense of the term. It belongs to that
class of papers which is flourishing most
signally in the East and West, and filling
the especial want of the people of to-day
viz. a cheap, spicy paper which furnish
es all t?ie news in the most reliable form
Many of our people cannot afford to jtake
the costly city papers, while others find
neither the time nor the inclination to
peruse theirlengthy and indistinct columns
printed in|small type. THE NEWS pres
ents in compact shape the telegraphic and frt ••.. i' W 't general news, which is spread out inter
minably in the metropolitin jourbals.
Its editorial columns, while, dealing large
ly with National and State politics are
especially devoted to city, township and
county affairs. And the miscellaneous
literary selections are culled with great
care, and with a conscientious regard for
the instruction and morals of the com
munity. The sound and healthful in
fluence of a hearty laugh is recognized by
THE NEWS corps, and no effort is spared
to lay before our patrons the latest and
choicest productions of the Twains and
Burdettes of the land.

The city department of the NEWS is
well looked after. Each day it contains
a complete record of the events occuring -.-3i -,. 4 -.v.. .j. in our midst. Sensationalism in statement

patrons are able to rely upon the subfl it stantial accuracy of each and every item.
