Henry should be very careful with his gun, because like the Leadville Orator, its liable to go off. —In'a'.tacking individual members of the police force of this city, the Gazette shows itself to be on par with the jackass party it represents, It is a noted fact t.Jiat the city has never been so well protected as by the present force, and the lie it pub lbhed a few days azo1 about two officers in the east end, savored of envy, us well as malice. —TheW. F. 8. held a quarterly meeting at Asbury,Sunday evening, which was both interesting and entertaining, The exercises were opened bv an appro priate bible lesson, read by the President Mrs. Greiner. Prayer by the Rev. Mr Green. The programme was most excel lent, the subject being "Bulgaria." The first exercise was a paper read by Mrs. Dr Hollingsworth subject-"A Glance at Bulgaria," which was very comprehensive showing study, and a thorough under standing of the subject. Then a mission ary soliloquy by five little girls, one of the best exercises of the eveuing. A paper was then read by the President, written by Mrs. Judge Scott, on "The Missionary V. ork ot Bulgaria," a good and interesting paper. A recitation wasgiven by Mrs. Coleman, which was very nicely rendered also reading by two young ladies, the Misses Giles and Armstrong They were all of a missionary subject The exercises were interspersed by excel lent music by the new choir, Miss Horton at the organ, Miss Copeland. Mrs. Philips and Mrs. Coleman singing soprana Mrs Williamson, alto Messrs. Williamson Coleman and McFaren, the bass and tenor. all singing in perfect time. We con gratulate the ladies in their success in the work, and hope to see a growing interest

til —,— Yesterday afternoon about three o'clock the

sent two of* its most distin

guished ambassadors to the brewery of Anton Maver, located at the corner of Ninth and Poplar streets. *to write up that institution. Mr. Kadel the obliging assistant book keeper volunteered to pilot them through the establishment, and taking the lead they made the rounds. The first place visited was the boiler and engine rooms here also was the latest improved air pump, used for pumping air into the cellars- and ventilating other parts of the building.

In the next room was located two large vats, balloon shaped, and capable of holding one hundred barrels of beer: which is one barrel more than the NEWS man could hold. In this room was also located a~steam pump used for pumping beer up to the top flodr, where it was discharged into large pans about twenty feet square, and eight inches deep. Mr. Mayer also has an apparatus for making beer from rice, which is- very ingenuous. They were next shown the vario»s processes through which barley passes to become malt. In the top story the barlev is spread upon tjie floor, and sprinkled with water: it is then dried and descends another story, where it is again sprinkled. It'is then let down in the basement, where it is again spread and allowed to grow sprouts appearing upon the grain inside of ten hours. It is then elevated up stairs, and goes through a machine that cuts off the sprouts, and the malt is ready. The capacity of the brewery is about 100 barrels a day, and additional buildings are being put up rapidly. Among others', a new boiler room is going up i.car the office, and new store rooms alsf*. The building is one of the finest we have ever visited, and Mr Mayer has reason to feel proud of such block. After making the rounds, their guide took them down into the vaults. Where a large keg of beer was on—but perhaps we had better not pursue this part of the subject any farther. It is needless to say they came, they saw. and went home well pleased.
