—To d»j bring diriftmu, wthsnfeelded to lay aside our customary maaner •f presenting ouraelves to the public and occupy oar aloted spaca by placing befwe our readers a few interesting facts In recard to the observation of thJs day by the different nations of the earth. As is well known to avary person who has the least degree of knowledge, Chrismas Is the day set apart for the celebration of the birth of our 8avior. It is not, however, so generally understood that it Is simply set apart, for many are under the impression that this Is really the anniversary regularly decendent from the year of the im portant event This day was selected by men of ancient historical notoriety as a fit day to be observed as a memorial measure by which the minds of the millions could be kept fresh In regard, to the adveo* of Jesus Christ. That the birth of Chirst did not take place at this time of the year is understood by all well read students, who are aware of the fact that this is tbe season of rains which annually occurs on the Judeao plains, and that thjs shepherds When they were guided to the saspot of our Savior's b'rtb by the Star of Bethlehem would not be heard their flocks in the field at such a time is perfectly clear in their mind*.: -f -«f fy
The first knowledge we nave of any Wlebration of th|bs im^bftant occasion i^ to bejfeund in the year 284, at which time we read in history of the destruction of a temple, by Deocletian during his reign, in which a number of Christians had gather-, ed to worship and cleKrate the birthday of Christ
There was no uniformity in early history, in the observation of this holiday at some times it was celebrated in'May at others in January, and at other times in April. The principal cause of fixing the S5lh of December as the proper time for this celebration was probably the uni versa! belief of the heathens who regarded the winter as a most' important part of the year, as a renewing of the year, as a renewing of the life of the power of nature.
Although all intelligent beings think proper to observe this daf it has Its
op
ponent*. The church of Scotland denounces any celebration on the ground that it is merely a creation of man. Of course an enlightened people regard it as an institution of grave import, and think it proper and possibly neccessary to fit chance the cause of
Christianity,
that
some custom should be kept alive and be a means of further educating the rising generations in the cause of religion. ioe-j-J —m-a-ia.. m—•"—* rcc*j[.\At.

Great Meat Mart
At P. P. Mischler No. 27 North Fourth Sireet, the display of beautiful meat is really most appetizing to the expicure. Mr. Mischler is a good judge of stock, and never buys anything but the very best. Consequently you see none of that stringy blue meat that so frequently adorns the windows of more than one butchcr-sbop in this city. Those who would eat healthy luscious fresh meat should not fall to call at Mischlers, Great Meat Mart at 27 N. 4th St.
