E. I. Road, is boiling over

with eicitement over a terrible crime committed at that place early this morning. A Christmas ball wa» given at the Opera House by the Clinton people and •very thing moved off as peacably and pleasant as could have been desired, un til about two o'clock when a couple of fellows became involved in a quarrel. It seems that one of the fellows named Jacob Shirley, of Neyr Goshen, who is a degraded and unprincipled character, was using vulgar language, which was not at all becoming to an audionce of that character. A young gentleman friend stepped up to him and politely requested him to spare the ladies in tbe hall, and refrain from the use of such immodest speech. Shirley, like the sneaking coward that he has proven himself to be, was ready for fight, and had to be removed from the hall by the Marshal. On promise to act in a more gentlemanly manner, he was allowed to re-enter the hall, but was no more than fairly int* the room when he resumed bis quarrelsome manner. The Marshal, Mr. P. Fitzpatrick, asked him to leave but be refused to do so, when the officer deputized a man named Isaac Faut to assist in getting the bully out of the way. In the attempt to do this the Marshal received a stab from a large knife in the hands of the murderer. The blade entered the left lung and penetrated the heart, causing almost instant death. Faut received a severe cut on the right arm, but will not necessarily prove dangerous. The villain fled immediately after committing the damnable deed and has not been seen since. It is thought by many that he will come to this city to draw money which he has in the bank, and Mont Casey, editor of the Clinton Herald, and a young gentleman named Trussel, have bean sent here to watch for the caiminal. It Is thought tlipt Shirley does not know the extent of his murder ous deed.

Don't forget the new Oyster Bay at 519 Main street. Anew broom sweeps clean. 109U9

Baker—a very talented actress of the emotional school, and a very charming woman—has appeared. and has coached her on all her tours. "Kit" was sold by Tayleure to Chanfrau for $800, and first produced at Buffalo. It has been a continual success for nearly twelve years, and has netted tbe acSor fully eighty thousand dollars.

And it may, without exaggeration, be said that, the two characters of "Mose" and "Kit." with which his name is so completely identified that separation is impossible, and which are known as two of the most remarkable creations of our stage, have given him a fortune of nearly two hundred thousand dollars!

Chanfrau. as may inferred from tbe four stroagly contrasted individualizations with which he is associated, as I have specified them, is an artist of great versatility,

His acting is marked by clear concep tion, vigorous treatment, and that attention to minute details which betrays the presence of genuine talent.

And his "Kit" ot to-day is one of thosd splendid creations which memory will place in its Chamber of Immortals!— FkiUt. World.
