AcoomotJia to the Commissioner of Pensions an additional appropriation of $18,8000,000 will be required for the payment of pensions during the current fiscal year. The bill passed by the House of Representatives last week appropriated $50,000,000.
Mrs. Jesse Grant has left a most agreeable impression in Washington. She is slender, willowy blonde, young and pretty, with high, clear-cut features, a pleasing voice, and winning manners.—

On Monday, afterstaying with him sixteen years the ball worked Its way out. It weighed oqp ounce and a quarter.

SmxATOR Bftcx introduced in the Senate yesterdays bill to authorize the issue of legal-tender notes on deposit# of gold. It stipulate* that the new notes shall have all the legal legalities of the greenback, and shall be of similar appearance, except that the words "Issued on deposit of gold" shall be printed 00 them. The £old is to be kept as a fund fqr the w* dtunptfon of legal teadera and use* for no other purpose,
T**hk is much more interest felt in Gov. Sprague's answer to the bill filed against bfm thanin the bill itself. It is just to governor Sprp^tte to say that his reputation at Washington, has not been such as might be inferred from the numerous and specific charges which Mrs. Sprague brings. The interest felt in the answer he will make arises from a conviction that he will make Senator Conkling a prominent figure, and give formal ahape to a mass of Washington gossip.

A fiery gentleman like Mr. Beck some times has his wsiy for a day or two in the Senate, but very soon the customary dig hity and heayiness of the body assert themselves. An elephant oould dance on a tight rope with as much grace as the Senate could transact in any but tbe deliberate and orderly manner customary with It One day last week Mr. Beck clamored vociferously against a holiday recess, and when the House resolution came over proposing an adjournment for two weeks he denounced it loudly. Some of the Senators, perhaps awakened by the noise, voted against the resolution. But a day or two of consideration, and a rec ollection that there has almost always been a two weeks recess, will change all that. I expect the vote of last week will be reversed and that Congress will stftnd adjourned frum the 22nd of December to the 5th of January.
Among Department clerks here there Is a growing feeling of uncertainty about the security of their positions. I am at a loss to know what has produced so grest a change from confidence of a month af?. Fqr twenty years nearly all the c^iattgps fimong these subordinate officials have accrued through death or resignation, It ms^ be .that the ^ppUcetipn of competitive teats to those already in office, as well as those applying, is expected to be a part Crf President Garfield's system of civil service reform^ That would seem to be eminently proper if Congress is to be asked for legislation making such position permanent.
The course of President Hayes in send* ing a commission to the Poncas to sscertain the facts in regard to their recent re moval and their wishes as to tbe future, is much commended. It was certainly unfair to the Indians to act -upon the reports sent here, by subordinates of Secre tary Sebum as to their willingness to remain where they new are, and it was unfalr to the Secretary to act officially upon stories of a contrary character, however strongly supported. The President has acted judiciously in seeking the truth from an entirely new source. His act, however, must be oonsldwed in eonie respects reflection upon the official conduct of Secretary Schurx.
