If the Cincinnati Convention had in thnated to John Lelly that he might go to that place, which Bob Ingersoll says don' exist, New York might have been carried by the Democracy. At all events it could have been no msre hopelessly lost than It,is, and it is always safer to have an ©pen enemy than a deceitful friend. Tit* messengers who brought the elee toral vote of the different States here have been disappointed as to the amount of mileage they receive. Heretofore it has boen 26 cents per milo each way. In the last appropriation bill it was changed to 85 centj| for one way only. The messen gcrs growl at this, but there is no help for it. A man can travel comfortably on 19)^ cents a mile. The vote of Georgia has not yet appeared by messeuger, but it has arrivetl through the mail. The vote of New York was brought by John Jacob Astor. He is entitled to about $90 mil eagc. but has not and probably will not apply for it. A man in His circumstances cannot bo expected to walk up the Treas ury steps for so smAll a sum as $90.

they must reorganize. They attribute their many loaves to the leadership of "bummers"* and "bosses" andlhey even go so far as U$ way tha% the f^mocrartic party voting one hundred thousand men was led through the dffcaslrolis batfie of 1880 by a common libeler and obscene blackguard. The history of the Democratic party as a whole is but the history of that party sectionally. They have always been led, by "boase**- who are «a unscrupulous as the imp of darkness. Ko other political party has ever existed in America, led byijuatsuch a class of men Beaten time and again, they continue to be led by the Same so called leaders, whose sole object has been to trnie their men for individual benefits. No one who looks down from a gallery In A church upon a devout and God*like congregation, can fail to notice how very prone the Christian is to the loss of his mir. Piety and bald-headedness seem to go together, that the head of the believer might be a shining light, a city on the hill. And yet if one goes to a same thing & observable. Worldliness is as bnd as piety. The bloated capitalist and the hornyhanded son of toil are equally liable to bare-footednesa on the top of the head. And this, too, in the fiice of the fact that proud science halt long wrestled with the problem, and inventions innumerable announce themselves as causing a Inxnrinnt growth of hair. Raldleadedness, however, does not impair a. man's value In the ordinary affairs of HA*. lie can bay or self, insure, run "a bank, or accept an office, with not hair his head for a first class eye-brow but when it comes to making love to a girl it is very much in the way. There is a great deal of capillary attraction in love. Girls adore a handsome suit of lotsy hair. It is lovely. And when a lover comes to woo her with the top of Ids head shining like a greased pumpkin, he i« al a disadvantage. In presenting the prospectus of THE INTRK OCKAK for 1881, it is scarcely necessary to reibind the people Of the «orthwest that the paper has been from the date of its establishment, preeminent as an exponent of fetalwiri Repabl!can!sm and in advance of all others in promulgaUng that system of political etiikai which has as its foundation the idea of humanity in poI!tl£s. "R Is not the adtd«ite of coldly
conceived theories, but the champion of Ideai warm with the blood of struggling and bleeding, humanity. As such it is read and known of all men.
It is not necessary to say that THK INTER OCEANhas uever deserted the platform or principles on which it began the fight Jar the rights of the citizen wits work in the interests of the people, but it is grat •ifying to know that the Republican part/ his come finally to stand squarely on tlus stalwart platform, and that in thus mov log forward the party leaders have ac knowledged that the position of THE ISTKR OCEAN, taken year* ago, was correct This is, to THE ISTESOCEAS, the bearti est and most emphatic indorsement of its policy and the most effective testimony as to the value of its influence, and the quality of its leadership. '1 he influence of this leadership never more apparent, nor the hola INTER OCKAX has on earnest Republicans was never more forcibly illustrated thau during the last Presidential campaign. Through the campaign earnestness loyalty and enterprise of the paper were everywhere recognized as important factors in determining the result, and its status as the leading Republican journal of the Northwest was fixed beyond dispute.
it is onl

In view of these facts, It is only eary to say THE INTER O CEAN will taiu this position by co straightforward course that has made it so many 'friends amon^ Republicans everywhere, and that has given it reputation of courageous fairness and journalistic zeal and enterprise.
Uce cohtinuins in the
It will insist on a party policy essentially stalwart, believing that the interests of all sections and the welfare of all classes will be best conserved by a close adherence to the fundamental principles of Republicanism.
It will maintain its present attitude in favor of protecting Americau industry against the pauper labor and concentrated capital of the old world, and will be foremost in the fight on any new questions that may be sprung on the Repub lican party.
THE INTEROCEAN will discuss all public questions fairly and fearlessly it will give the news accurately and fully, supplementing it with intelligent and fairminded commeut it will maintain its high standard in State, Washington, and foreign correspondence, and will continue to devote special attention the departments having reference to home affairs. "The Curiositv Shop," "Woman's Kingdom,".and "Farmand Homo'' have grown better with each succeeding year, and the conscientious effort that gave them their popularity will be devoted to their improvement
The Veterinary department, in charge of a practical veterinary surgeon, will ue made of special value to horsemen and stock-growers.
In the department of fiction the best serials have been secured, and these will appear in conneciicui with short stories and sketches.'
The market reports, taking in financial and commercial news and discussion of trade topica, will be made full and relia-1 ble, giving special attention to matters in which th« merchants, stock-growers, and farmers of the northwest liaye a direct in terest.
THK WKEKT.T INTTCH OCEAN will givet the news of each week complete^ presenting important matters in detail ar condensing minor news in snch a way 8 to not obscure or weaken any statement of fact. The weekly will be, in short, more comprehensive in character and scope than any other political or general newspaper in the country.
In addition to all other departments mentioned in connection with the weekly, the semi-weekly will continue its educational department uuder the present able editor.
Believing THE INTER OCEAN contributed not a little to Republican Success in the last campaign, thu proprietors have no hesitation in|asking|the stalwarts of the country toaid them in widening its field of influence. The wholesemenesa and effectiveness of the influence of such a paper have been demonstrated beyond dispute. Republicans interested in main-*) tainiog the integrity and c*prit de curp*of the party are Interested in increasing the ciculation of those papers that contribute most to the desired ends. Among, allsuch papers THE INTER OCEAN stands first.
