A neighbor of Pierson's in conversation with the desperate character yesterday, learned that he (Pierson) thinks himself justifiable in killing Ash and has concluded, as every one thought he would, not to come up to the city and give himself up. Some means will surely have to be ad dopted for his arrest by the authorities whose duty it is to attend to the matter,

Late last Saturday night a man named Oschelor entered the Cincinnati house on north Fourth street and stole $30 in cash, and a large number of bread checks. He was arrested by Chief App of the Evansville police force on Monday and a tele gram sent to Chief Russell of this city who went down and brought the thief to this place. Slace tbe p^bUc&ion of tlks Article a few days ago under the 1iead of "Paris•nne" we have learned some additional factsin regard to thejcasc. When Wm. Batson concluded to liy# with Alice Rodgers, to strentgben the dception he sent to his brother living in Mattoon and told him he was married and If ho would send his little daughter to Terre Haute she should be well taken care off. The brother sent his child, and Batson and the girl passed it off as their daughter. When the girl was taken home to Paris and the matter made known to the Mattoon brother he immediately came to this city to take possession uf his child. But search was in vain for Bataon had fled with the little girl "and no one knows where he haft gone."...

WH1' JiKWs,
W The aase of the State of Indiana against frank Trombley, charged with an assault and battery with intend to kill, oante up in the criminal court this mornIng for trial.
A jury had been empannelled and •worn to answer questions touching their qualifications to act as such, whenj Mr. Felsenthal, attorney for Trombley, filed an application for a change of venue from Judgtt Long, on account of his iutensst, bias and prejudice. At first the judge seemed disinclined to grant the change as ample time had elapsed since the Indict ment was formed, and before the expense and trouble of summoning a jury and witnesses, was inclined to make the application, but Anally decided to entertain it and grand the change.
Judge Patterson was designated to preside at the trial, but upon conferring with him it was ascertained that he could not try the case before the latter part of January. Thereupon Judge Long in order lo proveut unnecessary delay appointed Thomas W. Harper, Judge pro tern who qualified immediately and proceeded to the discharge of his duty.
What reason or motive Trothbloy or his counsel bad In desiring a chnngo of Judge, we are unable to say as no more competent and impartial judge occupies the bench in this or any oilier State than Judge Long.
The selection of a jury was proceeded with, and will be completed this afternoon.
The State is represented by A. J. Kelley, :N. G. Buff, and W. II. 8pencer of Areola, Ills., and the defendant by Messrs. Felsenthal & Board,
Thecaso of Levi Overholwr v»- iho Cincinnati, Effingham, and Quincy construction company which came up in the circuit court yesterday is still in progress ^o-day. The evidence will probably be competed to-day and the arguments will be presented to-morrow.
—Geo. Lickert, Vandalia yard master, in the yards of this city, was struck by one of the yard switchmen yesterday afternoon, and the flesh above his right eye cut open by the force of the blow caused a copious flow of blood. Dr. Spencer dressed the wound and relieved Mr. Lickert of the pain caused by the severed flesh. The jroung man who did the mischief was lined $18.50 by His Honor, the mayor, this morning for assault and battery. The fine was paid and the young man "turned out."
Attempted Safe Burglary. An attempt was made last nigt to blow open the safe at Hudnut's hominy mill. The night hawks who ever they were, entered the office by a side door which they in some way unlocked, Two holes, one about the center of the safe and the other immediately under 'the lock were boared by a drill about of an inch in diameter. They evidently were scared away for they left the second hole but half drilled. No one knows anything about the affair, and the watchman says he visited the office several times during the night and found everything all right. It certainly must have been some one acquainted with the office and the customes of the watchman.
