Win. Dwyer has resigned his position a* deputy, for constable Charlie Flaid, and accepted a position as book keeper for E. Burns. Dwyer, while In office, performed his duty satisfactorily, and was a worthy official. He will be sue ceeded by Charles Sparks. Mr. Sparks is a man of energy and good judgment and cannot fail to make a good constable.

Float.

A certain gentleman in this city sent a note to a popular saloonist, who by the way is said to be what society folks term "sharp," requesting him to send one of those "floats" by bearer. The saloonist immediately set to work to manufacture the article desired, and this is the way he did it putting a small quantity of sugar in the bottom of a glass he poured a few drops of whisky on top, and filled the glass with water. Two bottle corks on top this formed the "float" which the gentleman received. That certainly was a temp erance drink-eh? I

Fire.

Joe. Reagan and Jno. Goodpasture last night discovered a dense volume of 4moke issuing from the cellar of Dan Miller's grocery on Main street. An alarm was turned in and the department's prompt answer prevented a disastrous conflagration. The fire originated in the cellar where some one had thrown cigar in a bunch of shavings. The officers and fire department deserve great credit for their promptness in action and no malicious attacks can in any way impair the public mind in regard tor the worthiness of an organization such as we now employ to protect our property.

Nenator Voortaera

It is stated on good and reliable authority that Senator Voorhees has obtained the promise of Senator Jones, the Chairman of the Committee on Public Buildings to report favorably for the erection of public-buildings in this city, and that they will be provided for at the present session of Congress. This speaks weD for Senator Voorhees and every inhabitant and property holder in this city should be thankful for the untiring energy and zeal with which Mr. Voorhees has labored for the interests of.thiscity and people. Mr. Voorhees still has in view the Wabash river, which we will sooner or later hear more of.

Twentieth Anniversary*

A large number of friends last nighty gave a party at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. George A. Hayward, on north Fourth street in honor of the twentieth anniversary of their marriage. The house was literally crowded from garret to cellar by their many friends. The presents were numerous and elegant The fiuest a chamber set from Martin Thierman and company, of Cincinnati!, is the only one we can mention on account of the lack of space. Refresh-' men is was one of the principal features of the occasion, and was enjoyed by all pres ent. The Cadet Orchestra was present and furnished music for "the dance, which lasted late into the mora tog. The bridesmaid who attended Mrs. Hayward at the marriage, was present *nd danced the first set" of the evening with George.] A more pleasant evening's entertainment has not been enjoyed by the friends of the family for many days, and the occasion will long remain fresh in the minds of the gueists,

Among the most prominent and best paintings on salefrt the Chicago Novelty store we can mention a mountain seen in Colorada-Bison Valley in Utah, Moonlight on the Hudson, and the old Rock eys as viewed from the plains, they have also a Mamouth stock of Oil finished Cromos set in four inch leaf guilt frames that are beautiful to look upon. These are all first class goods, and our citizens will probably never have an opportunity of buying so cheap.

COURT NEWS.

CIRCUIT COURT.

Nothing of importance occurred in the Circuit Court this morning. A few cases were settled by the Attorney's, and some arguments on demurs occupied the atten tion of the court. The case of

W. S. WORLEY, V8. ROBERT G. HERVET.

The complaint is for the recovery of $40,000, worth of stock in the Paris & Decatur railroad. The plaintiff served a writ duces tetum upon Mr Genis, the receiver of the road, to pro duce the books of the concern in court for inspection, which was answered by Mr. Genis to, the effect that the books were not in his possession. The case will probably be continued by the plaintiff,

Lawyer and Client

A man was arrested by Constable Flaid yesterday afternoon and was about to prove rather heavy timber for the worthy constable until Dwyer, his assistant, came to his relief when they "yanked" him to the station-house, where Lawyer Cory appeared as his attorney, and told the ac cused to be quiet and he would defend him and get him off some one who was standing by, say that the fellow declared that he could defend himself and "pulled off" and knocked Cory down. Mr. Cory, however, says that such was not the case, and that the fellow drew back to strike, but that before he could strike, he, Cory, laid him sprawling upon the eold, cold ground, which was repeated three times This is one way of getting a fee.
