SECRETARY THuMl'SuN HEsWNED It is reported on reliable authority that Secretary Thompson has resigned his position Secretary of the Nav? of the United Sta$'J8, to take effect January IHh, 1881.
SOUTHERN P&I90H DIBECTOEMuch talk has been heard of late about the directorship of the£k)Uthern prison, and the candidates for the position and their fl turn, audjhe deserving o? each claims to tbejpositioa. We understandjthat James JlcUutcheon. Hon. I. N. Pierce,Llnas Burnett, and Jas.ILMcNeely.are all candidates for*that position from this place alone, and there are one or two other localities somewhat interested in the appointment yet to hear from. Considering that no other locality will have a candidate whose show will amount to anything, audit become* the duty of the Legislature to accept one of the above named gentlemen from among us, we can readily testify to the ability, of each and every gentleman named it to efficiently perform the duties attached to the office. Each gentleman no doubt thinks, that the party owes, to him, in consideration of valuable services rendered the Republican party in this immediate vicinity. and will no doubt press them energetically.
MORE SPIRITS.

The accused was then remanded until December Slat, on the same bail—£$0 with two sureties—as was fixed on the 7th instant.

TKMJ'KRANCIS workers can well Uke knowledge of the fact that liquors of all kind#, including wine* are of late seldom seen upon the tables or sideboards at any of the most fashionable receptions. Out lured people have come to tbo conclusion that wine is not an essential of hospitality The banishment of wine from the White House by Mrs. Hayes'-the inverted wine glass of General Grant at the gfeat ban queu that the world has given him, bare been the most effectual temperance lectures ever delivered. No father desire* hi# daughter to tnarry a drunkard, And no mother but revolts at the thought that her son should become one. There is no mistaking the fact that every day there is gmwlng a larger inquiry, how shall we *1 protect our sons and daughters from the legalized temptations to vice.
