JUDAS MACl'AILEUS,
Af^bOWIJTiG K.iLl LAST Ki~ A fair sized and select audience assem bled last mubt at Dowling Hall to assist in, and witness the production of Hander* great masterpiece, "Judas Maccabaeus," in Oratorio. This Oratorio is very popular, the world over, and is sung and performed in every land where civilization has brohght culture and music. Its conception grew out of Ancient History, and is immortalized by the genius of Handel.
The stage arrangements *were good enough considering the sixe of the hall, the platform was extended five or six feet out, and was made to accomodate very comfortably enough the fifty or sevens ty five lady and gentlemen performers. Professor Shide.was the conductor, and presided with marked ability. The accom paniment, however of the organ and piano seemed to us rather poor, the instruments were bad, and failed to give satisfaction. The performers, outside the chorus was Mass Fanny Kellogg, Soprano Mrs. A. L. Gould. Alto Mr. D. Davis, Tenor. Mr. R. A. Alder. Bass.,
The first number presented Jwas by the chorus "The Lamentations," and was, considering everything well executed, showing much* talent and considerable study, Mr. Alder's recitative, Simon, "Not vain is all this storm of grief'was for an amateur, exceedingly well rendered, Miss Kellogg, in "Pious Orgies, Pious Airs," was in good voice and sang and acted in fine style, making again, a decided impression by her charming ways and the fine vocal finish which she exhibited last night. The various parts taken by Mr. Davis and Mrs. Gould were well rendered, and both sang with spirit and expression. The entertainment was quite a treat upon the whole, and mUch deserved praise is due to the members of the Oratorio Society for the delightful entertainments which, they generally give to the public.
A Fiendish NeKro.
News was received here this afternoon of the dastardly duds of a negro at Eglesfleld station east of here on the I. & St. L. R. It. The fiendish brute was seen on' our streets several days ago clad in the uniform of a United States soldier, He went t,-» Eglesfleld station and engaged to a farmer near that place to take care of stock and do the farm work during the wintet Yesterday morning during the absence of the farmer the inhuman wretch ontoK«d.the housie, accomplished his purpoiKM fte irksidsdiately fled and has not been heard from since. The name of the parties w^ fiave not been" able to leans. The whole country' te alive with men searching for the. demon and should he be found the end of his existence will be the result.
Lecture,
A larger audience than Could have been expected was in attendance at the Baptist Church last night. The entertainment was introduced with a reading bv Rev. C.
R.
Henderson, and a duet by the Misses Greenleaf, Mrs. Dr. Waters gave an extended talk pn the subject of Grecian architeptujfe. which will b$ cqntiuuea next Friday night. The Misses Greenleaf again gave a vocal selection after which Rev. Henderson continued his talk on the History of Christianity. m. .. •. ..'...j ar

Another lx»ve Affair.
Marshall Ills, is the seat of another Illinois© sensation and that community is being supplied with material for the gossepsto feast upon. Last Ttfesday a young couple whose love for each other reached beyond the limits of discretion Concluded that paternal care was not necessary to shield them from the vicisfi tudes of life and that they were able to tak t^are of themselves, consequently|they eloped and came to this city where they are ncftv hiding. The ladys name is Dora Cloudenge and the man's name is Crocker. The maiden is but fifteen years old and her mother wishes her to be placed in a reform school. The age of the young man we cannot ascertain.
AMUSEMENTS.
KATIE FUTNAM.
"Lena, The Madcap," at the Opera House last night was enjoyed by a goodly number of spectators. Katie Putnam's representation of Lena, the Madcap, or the spoiled child is perfect, and she amuses her audience by her mischievous pranks and peculiar cjiild like acting. This afternooii She will repeat last nights performance, and to-night "Two Babes in the Woods" will be played.
The New "Evangeline will be presented Tuesday night njpxt by4 the Rice combination.
DR. WILLETT*.
Dr. Willets will open the course of Li1 brarj' lectures at the Opera House next Wednesday night.
Any one might have been flattered with the reception given to Dr. Willitts on Monday evening. The people of Philadelphia long ago understood that what this lecture does, he does well. It is fully enough facetious for any one not enwaist coat supernaturally
