The Profane Parson.

Once upon a time, in the dark ages o: the nineteenth century, there lived gentleman who held a commission in tne army.

But he had serious scruples as tc whether it was right or wrong to kill his fellow crea,ture8 at the bidding oi others or. in fact, whether it was not a crime to kill his fellow men at all.

He decided that it was wrong, especially the glitter and tinsel thrown about the murderous profession so ho sold his commission and entered the church, thinking that as he waa an intelligent man, and not a mere machine, he might do more good to humanity in that line than in the other line.

One day, discoursing to a rustic congregation on the folly of using profane language, he told them that he himself was once guilty of the same follv, and addicted to the same vice, but that he hud completely conciuered the habit.

A flying insect, hearing the boast, winked his eye at tl congregation, and thought, "I will put him to the test." So, making a circuit of the gentleman's head, he lit upon his nose. "See!" said the reverend gentleman "here is an illustration. At ono time I would have sworn awfully at this flv but. look, now: Raising his hand, he saia gently, "Go away, little fly! go away!" but the fly only tickled his nose the more.

An English physician says mosquito bites "drain the blood of its bad humor." But then, on the other hand, they put a man into a bad humor, so we can't see the advantage of encouraging the insect to bite. *,

One of the strange features of human nature is that a pious m«m will declare on his bended knees thdt'he is the chief of sinners, and has nothing good in him. and then will get up and brand the man as a liar who corroborates, these fervent statements,

A policeman who had offered his hand to a young woman and been refused, arrested her and took her to the Station-house. "What is the charge against this woman asked the lieutenant. "Resisting an offer, air," was the reply. She was discharged, and so waa the officer.

He KHFT HIS WORD.—OF, Governor Briggs. of Massachusetts, it is remembered that for several years before his death he never wore a collar, appearing thus unadorned at his levees ana on- all public occasions. Few men knew the stranao reason for tljis. He had a neighbor whom he likea exceedingly, and who was on the way to become a continued drunkard. With this man the Governor remonstrated warmly, until at last the listener answered, "I will never rink again if you will never again wear a oollar." "Agreed," said the Governor. Eaoh kept his word the man was saved, and the Governor paid no manner of attention to the sometimes sharp criticisms upon his apparent carelessness his
