-tfwi mmmki u«8s.^ «i «sood'* m% The fW, to-day, publisher an infer* view with Bob tagersoll, in which he says 1 think the nondmatioa of Enarlish was exceedingly unfortunate, Indiana bemff an October State the bestman in the State should have beeu nominated, either for Prerident or Vice President Personally I know nothing of Mr. English, but 1 have the right to say that he waa exceedingly unpopular. Histake number two was putting a plank in the platform insisting upon a tariff for revenue only. That little word 'only* Was one of toe most frightful mistake! ever rafcde by a political party. The third mistake was Hancock's definition of the tariff. It was exceedingly unfortunaie, exoedeicgly laughable, iand came just in the nick of time. The fourth mistake war the speech of Wade Hampton, I mean the speech that the Republican papers claim- that he made. Mistake number five was made in Alabama, when they refuted to allow a Greenbacker to express his Opinion. That lost the Domocrats enough Greenbackers to turtt the scale in Mais*, and enough in Indiana to election. I&tstak change six was ia the General Garfield, ed on, magnified plied until at

made against ty were insistand mufti? last the whole
thing assumed the proportions of malicious libei This last was a great mistake, for the reason that a number of Democrat* in the United Slates had most heartily and cordially indorsed General Gardeldas a man of integrity and great ability. Such endorsement* had been imuu K«f thn iwndfriff DMMcnti of the North and South, among the® Governor Hendricks, the editor of the Worid,^ *n& many others 1 might name. Jen? Black had also certified to the integrity and inteliectual grandeur of Geaeinl Garfield, and when afterward he certified^ to the exact contrary the people hellered tint it was a proeecutkra. The aixt mistake, number seven, was the Chine» letter. While it ktttGszfieid California, Hevada»
and probably New Jersey, it did him good in New Yorfc. These/in my judgment, are the prinaipal -r mistakes made by the Democratic party in the campaign. Had McDonald been, on the ticket the, result might hive beey different, or had the party unitedon aome^man in New York satisfactory to. the factors, it might have ne of the happiest days in on which the Cinqn not nominate Sey oaour a»d did nominate English.
Xb® chief oriminal was tracked to the tireslidld of the Executive Mansion, and otir cOmmittee passed a resolution callkig upon the President to appear before the committee and defend, himself from the damping pi^of that -made^^=him the chief conspiratpr. .The pighi.of the day that the resolution was passed you called with it upon thfe President. Itvas after midnight before you left the White House, ama^ and sick, at heart, and at your suggestion that very day, the resolution was revoked. I need hot Say that you and I know why that resolution was so suddenly abandoned. The fact thtrt unthe ^circumstances it .was revoked, tells the whole story. The very Democrats of the commitfee shrunk from: the thmaten^ exposures
The letter closes aa follows fo? "But you are.not,a great man. You read in your library of heroic achieve menta. Your doul swells bverthe poetic expressions. You are futi of thought and impulse,, and all ends in a support of men ou despise and a party with which you av^ nothing in cothtiion." *"""7
