NfiW Volts, Novemta*r ^.--Richard A. Spring, a young lawyer of this citv whose parent# are influential and weal thy, ami who was graduated at Prlnoeton College and recently admitted to the bar. was arrested to-day on the charge of betrayal, under a promise bfjmarrlage, preferred by Emllmlines. agt*l twenty three, who earns her living, she'•ays,'as a militier. The prisoner was taken before Justice Wandell, at Jefferson Market Polic Court. His accuser, accompanied bv her counsel, was also there, ami cast fiery glances in his direction. ,A short examination wan held, in which it wa* alleged that on June 7, 1878, she was betrayed by Mr. Spring, under promise of marriage that subsequently, as he failed to fulfill his promise, a warrant was issued for his arrest on February 26 that he, to escape the consequences 6f his conduct, tied to South Carolina, to his parents, and waa followed there by Miss limes. He managed to elude her presence, and returned to New York, where he was arrested to day. The counsel who appeared on be half of the prisoner denied the charges entirely, t^tid moved that the oxtuninn tion be continued. He claimed that Miss Hines was acting from sordid motives, and further stated that he nn dersto(d a charge of infanticide against the prisoner was in contemplation, andt Spring, therefore, was entitled to immediate examination. While counsel was speaking, Miss Mines interrupted him by repeated "Ha! Ha's!" and other wild exclamations. In regard to the alleged charge of infsntieide men tioned for detense, this statemen: is made "Under solemn promise promise of mar viag»« Spring induced Miss Hines to live with niin at No. 35 East Fourth strt-et In February of this year Mi^ liiues became a mother. iternhardPa Reception.

NKW YORK, November I).—There is a good deal of dissent among our cultiva ted persous from the enthusiastic plaudits given to Bernhardt in the press. Some of the critics, indeed, handle her severely, but many ordinary theater goers have ex pressed to-day a great.sense of disappointment, and declare that she failed to move her audience.

Mile. Bernhardt was asked by aTri bune reporter to-day, "What do you think bf your American audience?" "I find it very much like an English audience. The public strike's me as being much the same. I have had some experience with the public of different countries. and I nm very well contented with my reception here, although the audience last night did not show me marked favor and enthusiasm until the fourth act. In Paris the second diet of 'Adrienne'is always well received and applauded. But that part of the play is full of delicate of expression and half shades of "sentiment and feeling. Of course this is more thoroughly comprehended in Paris, or when* French is generally spoken. In I,ondon the percentage of persons understanding French does not .seem to be larger than in New York/

I etui think of no -one more niiserable than myself, (falling on her khees with hands clasped overlier head) I Jean scarcely give vent to my feelings, or ppur out the sorrows of my heart to the 'I God who made me. The scenes of the present stand up before me^like the hid e|us form of an unseen spirit. Oh that I could cast it from me with.a mighty eff^rt. or hurl it from me with one gigantic stroke, my soul would bubble up wltli jdv and I would be at rest. I have been robbed of cay reputation and, prop e^ty by a cruel husband, and now I am sapplanted in his affections by this strange gin. Oh! my hopes are blasted Jam for eyer^ndone."
