MitAtcsE, OctilK^r dJ.—General Orant had a gnind reception hen* to-day. At the raaasmeeting, this afternoon, he spoke as follows:
Citizens of Syracuse, I
ujji
here among
you to day at you request, as conveyed to, me through your committee, uot to say much myself, but to show my iuteresl in the cause of the Republican parly at the approaching election. If I (lid not feel a deep interest in the success of this party, I would not f»H here. If 1 did not believe it waa for the interest of all parties and all sections that we should' succeed at this time, would not be here. Among the Democrats of the North 1 have a great manv warm personal friends, men whom I like personal) as well as any friends I have under ihe «mn. Some nf them (those whom I. claim as my friends) are patriotic anil good men, and yet I believe that if the Democratic party was composed entirely, ^orth and South, of such men I would still be a Republican, but I would not feel so much distress if the Republican party waa not auccessful. But even admitting that all Democrats in the Northern States were of the class I speak of (but I do not admit it)' we would not be secure under a Democratic administration. You all know that the bulk of the Democracy is in the Southern States, and that it will control it if the Democratic partv gets in power, and it just as impossible that the limited numtief of Democrats of the North should control, as it is that the dog's tail would wag the dog. [Lttughter] In all instances the dog will wag the tail and if they should get into power the rail would be so powerful that it would stweep down at one stroke all of our industries and prosperity, all of our banks and your manufactories,, and your industries of all sorts and descriptions. We don't want to see Ihis. We know that with all the ortcrgy of the Northern people, we all know that the North, with all its great intelli-
gence, its freo schools, its energy and its industry, could not be stricken not rise iijlain but in rising it would suffer years of toil and disappointment. We want to avoid that, and to do that we want to elect Oarfleld and Arthur in November (Applause. 1 You will probably hear, probably have heard and probably will hear again before election day. the Democratic party arraigned as the party that has never advocated (certainly not in a quarter of a centuarv), advocated or done a mod act. I will not quite aereo with those speakers now, but a few days ago I would. I, within
a
few days, read an ex
tract fr6m a speech made by a Southern orator, whose audience happened to be composed largely of colored men, and he told them they were laboring under a great mistake IS supposing that Lincoln had emancipated them. He reminded them of the fact that Lincoln's emancipa tion proclamation give them ninety days (the rebels) in which to lay down their arms and to save their property, but they fit right straight ahead," he says. The proclamation did not emancipate them, and hence Lincoln was not entitled to the cret!t of it. Now. gentlemen, I am sure I shall introduce to you a speaker (Woodford )who will ftv» you many more reasons than I possibly can (particularly on my feet) why you should support Garfield and Arthur on the 2nd day or Novem ber next. 5" iNWEHMf XeTBR.* $$

Joseph Murphy in the title role of Kerry Gow Will appear at our Opera House next Friday-evening5*,4t is thus spoken of by
Montreal pnper: *1 "It is a combination of the emotional and humorous exquisitely blended to gether, producing pain and pleasure al most at one moment. The dialogue is encnisted with srems of wit, whose sparkle is not dulled by the finger of time, but which are fresh from the mine of the author's brain as a consequence the point of a joke or witticism can nevei1 be anticipated but it,is immedistfly comprehended when the sentence is' finished. The emotional scenes in the play are quite as strongly portrayed as their oppo sites, and the sympathies of the audience ure readily enlisted and easilj' retained."
