A Giant Buried in the Bank of England. There are only four streets, I am told, says a London correspondent of the Baltimore Sim, in nil London, whence vetfdnre i# not to be seen that is to say, till the streets of Lofldon command a view of some growing green, trees or jshruba. This is rather startling when jyou come io think of the hundreds of acres of houses and tuvrrow streets of this great city of cities presented to the view of the visitor. Take "the Old Lady of Threudneedle street," as the citizens disrespectfully term the venerable and mighty bank of England. Within its ••strong walls is a garden, even a delicate fountain, and a big tree, indeed two trees and some numerous plants. Fresh and attractive they stand out in charming contrast, smiling at bnsy business and listening to the ever tantalizing clink of gold. This garden is more beautiful and attractive than any I have seen in many towns in America—a land of trees! You survey this emerald spot, studded with floral rubies and adorned with petalled turquoise, and you look around at the toimz fringe of guinea gold, and exclaim, "No garden in the world is so richly environed." Millions of money per monttj pass around this garden.' Beneath that tallest tree there is a story. It is brief. Allow me to tell it for the first time in print, j-ome years ago the bank had a clerk whose* height measured nearly seven feet two inches. He was a marvel in more ways than one. He could add up 1 don't know how many columns of figures at one time without an error do subtraction and multiplication simultaneously, and look upon "vulgar fractions" disdainfully. In a word he was a ugure. Nature nas given to big men gentle dispositions.
This figurative giant wafl niofftamiable and a general favorite. The clerks in the bank of England are all gentlemen by I birth and education, not a few of them being by blood ties allied ti the oldest families in the kingdom. Indeed, I am told one is the lineal descendant of a king, and as the monarch through t-hit) descendant proclaims Ireland as their domain, I will not for a moment stop to depute the pedigree of "the pretender." In good companv the giant labored and lived and died, for giants cannot carry their lengthened sweetness long drawn out beyond the period allotted to man generally any more thau a dwarf. When the giunt of the bank of England added up his last figures and balanced his accounts with this world his clerkly companions sought to shroud him the leaves of the ledger of their esteem and bury him beneath Uie tree I mentioned in tne precincts of the bank he loved so well. There, in this verdant oasis of the commercial desert, his financial spirit is continually rejoiced by the tinkle of gold and the ever-moving millions, not a farthing of which he can
reekou on.

Choosing Husbands,
It is not often that wouitn of any ract become so enmeshed in circumstance.as to be obliged to choose their husband*. But an instance of the'kind H-ceritly occurred. A Turkish slave-ship having been captured by the English off ,the coast of Egypt, ten masculine und seventy feminine slaves were released. The former enlisted in. the Egyptian army, but the latter were diftieult to, dispose of. By the treaty between Great, Britain and the Khedive the importation: and exportation of slaves is forbidden, but their detention and sale is permitted, for some years yet. Several officers of the irmy .came to the Pasha of the district and oflered to buy some of thej women, but he ^declined to pavt j\itli:' them at any less price than that 6f nmrage. die then announced that the

A number of men,| mostly soldiers, assembled at the^ time appointed. The ex-slaves were very! *hy at first, and huddled together with-: jut looking up. Finally, ohe of them, glanced around, advanced to'a darkj Egyptian sergeant, laid her hand uponhis shoulder, and he accepted his connubial doom.* Then all tte otherf chosej quickly, as if they might lotfe* theiij chance. Five of all the men demurred* but in a short time the seventy women were all provided for—quite as well, perhaps, as if they had been married in our ion.
'They are p^mr but respectable," is a phrase very often used, «r misused, since it seemf to infer tlmt tbe fact ot poverty is evidence of resjectability. No one who knows the poor intimately can for a moment absent to such a heresy.
