LM.. October 10.—
Indiana Legislature being Republican on joint ballot will choose a Itepublican to hncceed lion. Jowph E McDonald in the United Stales Senate for the term of six years, front the 4th of March next. Who hat man shall be is already exciting much inquiry. General lien. Harrison lias been named for the place, and the suggestini of a name of one so distinguished is most natural. Hut common consent accords General Harrison a place in the Cabinet of General Garfield, and no man In Indiana, or possibly in the entire West, i» more like|\' to be called to such a position by the next President than our own eminent and distinguished citizen Therefore it is not likely that General Harrison will permit himself to be named in connection with the Senutorship. •fudge Gresham, of Indianapolis, a tnan of eminent qualification and fitness, has also becu spoken of Hon. Will. Cumliack Hon. John C. New. ex-Govenor Daker, and others have been named, all good men and true and well qualified.
But the late political contest has b-ought before the people of Indiana, a .nan who iit now a central figure to the whole country a man who led the Republican hoist of Indiana with the most distinguished gallantry to the grandest victory that ever wreathed the Itepublican banners. That uinn is Albert G. Porter. To day the united voice of the Repub* lican party of the- United States goes up in praise of Albert G. Porter Tor his gallant achievements In the political struggle just closed in the State of Indiana. No candidate of any party ever made a grander canvass of Indiana or added more strength to his party. His excellent personal traits of character, his untarnished reputation, his cultured mind, political sagacity, unbending: honesty and sterling integrity make him notable in these davs when corruption is so dominant. \Vhat a grand Senator such a man would make! No man that Indiana lias produced has reached a deeper depth in the conlldencc and affectionM of the Republicans of Indiana than Albert G. Porter. In Southern Indiana he is especially appreciated and admired for the sterling qualities than adorn his inauhood, and that he is the almost unanimous choice of the people of thin section of the State for Senator is not, therefore, surprising. The office of Governor would l»e most faith fully and competent!} Oiled and adorned by Lieutenant Governor Hanna, in the event of Governor Porter's election to the Senate, and he would give to the State such an administration would elevate Indiana in the seale of civilisation and enlightened legislation. .. Therefore there would lw1 no risk to take ly the Republican party in transferring Governor Porter from the Gubernatorial chair to the X*. S. Senate. That such a consumation ftnay be brought about the Republicans of "Southern Indiann will most earnestly pray, and for it they will be found working as soon a* they have gotton through with helping to give General Garfield

There has so far been services held at the Station House, and jail by the "faithfu' few,'' though under some difficulties at the jail, partly owing to the miserable condition of the building, which the ladies were ^iven to understand, was densely populated with other inhabitants than the prisoner*. The prisoners seem very thankful for papers and the services, {Maying respectful attention, and sometime joining in their voices behind the bars, when an old aud familiar hymn Is started, the Station House officers haye vary kindly facilitated the efforts of the W .C. Too. much praise cannot be given to the Rev. Mr. Perry for his unselfish zeal and assistance, The Rev. Mr. Henderson has also assisted the W. C. T. U. The chairman of committee on fallen women, Mr*. But their motto i9 "In God we Trust." Miss Seely, who was appointed a special committee to see about getting the use of the Congregational church, reported an absolute refusal. Mrs. Hollingsworth, chairman of committee on reform, chose the balance of committee as follows: Miss Seeley, Mrs. Guerineau, Mrs. Wells. Mrs. Coleman, Mrs. Hodge® and Mrs. Scott. Committee on finance met this afternoon to select a chairman, and arrange the modus operandi. Finance being one of the important affairs we conclude there will be work soon. Through the natural state of man which compels him to communicate hb» joys to another, the faithful patriots turned out. and with their hearts overburdened with joy at. the late victory, ex pres^tl their feelings bv one of tbe grandest turnouts of the season., It w«s stated in our daily papers that no citizens would carry torchlights and that only tbe escort would take part in the procession. The more enthusiastic citizens could not approve of this however and the result, was a large numlier of men who do not belong to any of our organisation* came out with the torchlight on their shoulders and (parched down the street with the air and expression of a man who has done his part in the accomplishment of a good purpose. The Garfield Guards and a large number of citizens bearing lights, bead* by the Ringgold band about 7:80 o'clock marched to the Terre Haute House toes cort'the speakers to the Wigwam. The afreet was perfectly blocked with spectators, thus, proving' that, the great joy which is swelling in the hearts of our Republican brethren, requires some means of manifesting itself.
Tbe determination of th* party to continue the good work is shown in the fact that members would take it upon themselves to be present on the street when the weather is so disagreeable and threatening as it
