LATEST BY TELEGRAPH.

NEW YORK,

October 11.—The Tribunt

gives, editorially, tomorrow and interestin/? story of a fast mail from Australia to England:

Wednesday last Postmaster James learned that Pacific Mail steamer City of Sydney September 9, had reached San Francisco October 5, two days ahead of time. She was just two boars too late to catch the mail train of that day and a deiaj' of twenty-four hours was unavoidable. The Schedule time from San Francisco would brintf this important mail to this city two hours too late to catch the fast departing British steamer. Mr. James went to the Union Pacific office in this city, represented the facts to Sydney Pillion, and asked if a special cou'a not lw put on to catch the regular mail train of tbe day before. 8. H. If. Clark, General Manager of the Union Pacific, at Omaha, and A. N. Towne, General Superintendent Central Pacific, at 8an Francisco, wt-re present. "Where is the train with the mail at ih time?" Dillon asked of Towne. "Onth-? Humbolt Division somewhere," wiu the reply. 'Can a special catch the other train?" he asked. Clarke replied In the affirmative, but added: "We shall have to run the special a thougand miles, and it will cost a thousand dollars." "I don't care what it costs," replied Mron it

The telegraph was put in requisition, and it was done. The regular mail train was overtaken at Omaha. The Australian mail car was attached last night at 9:18. It was landed in this eitv and to-day it goes by the Arizona to England. If the vessel makes schedule time, the trip from Sydney will have been made on the shor est time on record, about forty days.

AND STILL ANOTHER

Accident On The I, & S.L. A Passenger Train Destroyed By

Fire

We are again compelled as a journal of of news to place before the reading public the account of another serious wreck on the I. & St. L. railroad which occurred last Sunday morning. The particulars as giyen are taken from, the Indianapolis Mm:

A collision occurred on the Indianapolis & St, Louis railroad at 6 o'clock yester day morning, at Nokomis, Illinois. A west bound freight train in charj^e of Con ductor Jack Granger, took the side track at Nokomis to let pass the New York express, which left here Saturday night at 11 o'clock, in charge of Conductor J. W. Browning and engineer Stevens. In taking the side track the freight train cleared the main but when the passenger approached the switch was still open, and th engineer not noticing the obstruction sent his train flying into the rear end of the freight. The collision was very destructive. Next to the caboose stood a Union tank line car loaded with oil. The concussion burst the tank and submerged the passenger train withthe fluid, which got ignited and begun to burn. The cars were telescoped In such a manner.that the passenger train could not bo relieved from the fire, which in a very short time had enveloped it, destroying the baggage car and all its contents, except, two bags of mail, one ordinray coach, a parlor car and a Woodruff sleeper. The cab of the engine was burned and the coal in the tender catching fire warped the tanks until they are entiretT ruined. Notwithstanding all this destruction of property, which will reach $20,000. the engineer and conductor of the passenger train are the only persons who received even the slightest tnioriw.

Superintendent E. B. McClure was in the train, and set a full force of hands at work to save the machinery and clear the track.

The hrakeman who closed the switch is one of the oldest and most reliable men on the road. He says he carefully locked it, making the track clear for the passenger train to pass. The wreck is a mysterious one if the brakeman's story is true.

Wlllwun Tirom, hook-keeper of the Ind ianapolis rolling mill, was on the lil-fatcd passenfier train. Among other particulars of the disaster, he write* that the Alice Oates ^mpany lost aU theft- baggage in the flames.
