Murder or Accident? A Woman Found Dead on The &St. L.Railroad x^t^u *. Track.
Anothe^ rnysterionS affair may be chronicled in the history of our community among the many events of similar cases. Although the matter is at present surrounded by an impenetratable mist, which diligent investigation has thus far failed to fathom we are yet hopeful that by constant and untiring action the cause of the matter may be evolved. As the local ssenger train was this morning go ing north on the I. & St. L. road, when near the crossing or the county farm road, the conductor discovered the form of a woman lying at..tbe side of the track. The train was stopped and Mr. Mercer, a farmer near the road, informed, them that tbe lifeless body of a colored woman was laying near his house, just east^ of the railroad track' Mr. Mercer immediately sent a man to town with the information and a summons for coronerEhrenhardt.
Mr. Ehrenhardt, went out and examined the surroundings. The woman's hair was strewn along the side of the track for the distance of about 60 yards, and blood was scattered about the place where she was lying. A gash in the side of her bead proved the cause of her death. Several sliarht scratches on the side of her face, and the above mentioned wound was all the injuries received. She was brought to town and placed in P. J. Ryan*8 undertaking establishment, whence she was removed to the county vault.
A large number of our colored population visited the body this morning, but none recognized her. She was well dressed and had the appearance of being a sound healthy woman. Whether she murdered oy the hand of an unknown assassin. or whether she met her death from the cars is not known. It appears that had she been struck by the cars and carried at the distance, the strewn hair, would indicate. Her injuries wou!d|have been more extensive. No verdict has as yet been returned, and we cannot make known the cause of her death, until further investigation unravels some theory.
Gazette. .A-T..
The Gazette,3 an evening paper of some pretentions, has been harping upon home-patronage, for the last few issues, and says that some of our best people have been making themselves idiots by purchasing goods elsewhere than in this city. A very prominent citizen approach ed us this morning with the remark: "Have you seen what Ball has been saying in that sheet of his, for the last few days, about our people buying goods in other cities?" "On the whole." remarked the gentleman, "the principle is right, but what I complain of is the indiscriminate and wholesale charge of every one being idiots who happen to purchase a few articles elsewhere, .Th«Vre were articles whkh I wanted in the line of ladies all tcool under wear. I called at Hoberg, Root & Co., and several other houses but could not find the articles desired then I went to Jauriet & Co. who sent for the goods. Two years ago I wanted the same articles couldn't get them went to another city and bought them. For this I am called an idiot. 8inc6 Ball is so very indignant about the matter, the object, (advertising,) being very apparent to every one, I wish to enquire why he went to St. Louis to purchase wall paper, which he used in papering his house, when such houses as Ryce & Walnwley, Brokaw Bros., and other good houses in the city are so easily gotten at? Let the distinguished teacher give good reasons why he ignom! home houses in this very important deal which would have very materially aided home institutions, and then those of whom he complains will be equally ready to give as satisfactory reasons for their purchases abroad."
