Marshall Herald: Miss Mattie Rose, of Terre Haute, was visiting Mrs. Clara Shipe, in this city last week. She returned home, yesterday afternoon

and its blackleg parents. Were this not a fact we would replv to their low liings at the managers of our fair. We wilt state, however, that the reason that paper did not know there was a fair last week was because it was so infernal drunk that it couldn't see any thing. '*~J

Wris Gaxette. ~~~J We expected to have been overwhelmed with suggestions as to the most feasable plan oi securing a sufficient supply of water, but we have been disappointed. Nobody seems to take sufficient interest in the matter to express an opinion.

Wlien a number of our fine stock men shipped their stock to the Terre Haute fair, the directors of the fair wanted to charge them fifteen per cent, on what premiums they should secure, besides the regular entrance fees. Our stock men gave them to understand that they would ship their stock back home before they .would stand-such imposition: The directors backed down from their proposition. It is just such demands as these that gives Terre Haute fairs away.

IT seems that Gregg never gets around in time for his speech but can always be interviewed.

A ILA.—Many persons are puisled to understand what the terms fourpenny, sixiwnny, tenpenny, mean asapplied to nailsi Fourpenny means four jxmnds to the thousand nails, sixpenny six pountk to the thousand naiis and so on. It an old English term meaning at first ten pound nails (the thousand being understood bat the old Englishman dipped it to ten penny and from that it degenerated until penny was substituted for pounds. So when you ask lor foor» penny now days yon want those which will weigh four pounds. When a thousand nails weigh lew than a pound they are called tacks, etc^ and are reckoned ounces.
