The Hippodrome races were enjoyed by everybody. We beg to call the attention of the public to the display made by D. H. Baldwin & Co. from their Indianapolis house. This firm was established in 1859 in Cincinnati, Ohio, and now has branches in Louisville, Ky., and Indianapolis,. Tnd. The strict and unflinching business integrity of each member of the firm has given it great prominence in mercantile circles, and is a sufficient guarantee of the grades of instruments they handle. First in the list is the Decker Bros, pianos. It. seems almost useless to speak of their merits, but as worthless imitations have been thrown upon the market under the style of Decker and Brothers, and Decker &.Co», New Ybrk, and the "Decker" we deem it. but just to publish the following letter which will explain itself:
LETTER.
In justice to tin* fair fame of a most eminent house, the undersigned take pleasure in stating that, to the best of their knowledge and belief, the Messrs. Decker Brother*, of No. 38 Union Square, New York, are the only PianoForte manufacturers of that name (or of any similar style of firm designation) whoso instruments are of the first cli*s, or who manufacture Concert Grand*. We have never used, either in public or private. any "Decker" Pianos other than those of the above mentioned and celebrated firm. THEODORE THOMASv Conductor N. Y. Philharmonic Society.
CARL BERGMANN. HENRY G. ANDRES, EI). MARZO, Late Musical Conductor of the Mario-Patti and De Murska Concert Companies. 8. B. MILLS, WM. MASON, OTTO SINGER, Ass't Director Cm. May Festival. MICHAEL BRAND, Conductor Cin. Orchestra.
Their Cincinnati house is the largest Piano house in the West, and the two branches carry over one thousand instruments from which any customer can make his selections. Their gentlemanly agent, Mr. L. W. Merrin, informs us that the instruments on exhibition here will be sold in this market at a great bargain, as the firm desire them left here to advertise their business. They are beauties, and no one visiting the fair should fail to see and hear them.
Our fellow townsmen, Paige & Co. show their good judgement in the choice of instruments to exhibit at the Fair. The space in which to display their wares was limited to two' instruments, and they chose the Wilcox & White and the Mason & Hamlin Organs from among their imiueuse ftock. These instruments are all in finish of exterior or tone of the instrument, all that the most fastidious could wish for, and are to be had only through the Arm in this city.
When musically luduced, take a stroll through their elegantly selected stock, and when you want an Instrument of any description you will save money, time and trouble, besides getting just what you want by consulting Paige & Co.
Their city office ami salesroom is No. 607 Main street. The firm of Bagant ami Faller make meritorious display of the handsome office furniture—They make a specialty of the description of work and are excelled by no house either east or west for beautiful useful and ornamental carved work, among their manufacturers are Fancy Cabinet Work, Wall Pockets, Brackets, Side-Boarda, Showcases, Carvings, Turning, General Machine Work, Scroll Sawing, Jobbing, Repairin&aad re-Varnishing done on short notice. Cream Tartar—Where and. How Procured. The pure cream of tartar of commerce exists naturally in the grape, and during fermentation of the tart wines in France it is deposited on the sides and bottoms of the casks. In its unrefined state it is called crude tartar, or argols, and is taken from the cask after the wine has been drawn off. Each former has his crop of it according to the amount of wine h» has produced.
It is imported into this country as argols, and does not appear upon the Custom House entries except as argols— never as cream of tartar, for the reason that the facilities for refiuing in this country are superior to that or the old Countries hence, it is brought here in the crude form, and then subjected to the process of refining.
This dispels the impression many have that this article cannot be procured in its native purity. There is no 'doubt but what cream tartar is largely adulterated, and that ordinarily found in the shops is cheapened by either burnt bones, terra alba, or the hurtfiil alum, from 10 to 90 percent.
The Commercial College has a big run this terto. We do not know of an institution in the West that has sueh a deserved popularity as this College, It is strange that any young man will neglect such an opportunity 61 obtaining a firstclass business education, when ft can be obtained so cheaply. Night sessions are well patronized.
