The Sen Francisco ChromcU says: The celebrated Dr. Carver, has a rooet formidable rival in the person of DT. John Bath. He gave an exhibition 6f bis wonderful skill with the rifle at Shell Monad Point Berkley, fn the presence of about one hundred spectators, largely composed of the "crack shots," with both the rifle and shot-jron. There was also a fair sprinkling of ladies in the assemblage.
The doctor was accompanied by hki wife, a prepossessing laay of medium {stature, who also entertained the company by a brief display of her skill in the manipulation of the rifle and pistol.
This was Mrs. Ruth's first exhibition in pubuc, and she manifested considerable perturbation at first, or, as the Doctor expressed it, "she was a little skittish

her first appearance/' but after first two or three shots the nervousness disappeared, and the glass balls were shattered in quick succession.
The balls were thrown into the air by an attendant, Mrs. Ruth breaking six out of nine. She then perforated a glass ball held in an attendant's hand at a distance of about twenty feet, and repeated the experiment with the hammer of the rifle held downward. She alsoshattered with a pistol several balls thrown in the air, ana also a ball held in the hand. Mrs. Ruth was loudly applauded for her steady nerve and wonderful marksmanship.
Dr. Ruth then proceeded to give an exhibition of his fancy shooting at a glass ball held in the hand of bis attendant, he taking fcim through his legs with his back to the object. He also held the

accomplished, and one requiring considerable nerve on the part of both himself and attendant, was shooting a cigar out of the mouth of the latter, an experiment which led many to predict that the Doctor's assistant would not live to a very green old age. Another interesting experiment was shooting without a sight, that essential adjunct being covered by having a piece of cardboard
The following experiments were also successful]w accomplished: shooting a ball from the head of an attendant, the latter being blindfolded the same feat with the bandages removed from the attendant's eyes, and tlie lntter looking Into the muule of the rifle. Qne-hana shooting with a small rifle, manipulated in a variety of difficult w'iivs, holding a rifle with the hands placed back of the neck.
In none of these shots did the Doct&f fail to shatter the balls from the hand of tlie attendant. One of the most marvellous feats he perlortaed was the following: Placing a glass ball on the ground, the Doctor shot in front of it, and plowing under it sent it flying several feet in the air by the force of the concussion, and before it reached the ground another shot broke it into a thousand pieces.
An exhibition of very rapid shooting was also given, the Doctor breaking the balls as fast as the attendant could throw them into the air. The exhibition closed with a display of shortrange pistol-parctice, in which the marksman was not as successful as with the rifle, having,as he remarked by way of apology, had little experience with the weapon. All those present expressed mucn astonishment at Dr. Ruth's won-

gome people think that mart when they abuse a newspaper or an editor. They forpet Out many pftpen have largely profited by becoming the objects of these attacks, and that some editors have thriven on being assaulted. Aside from tbi* consideration, it should be remembered hat an editor is often obliged to occupy a very delicate position. His sense of right will sometimes cause him to attack or defend a man, a basiness, a class or a cause at a risk of making enemies of others, only to find those in whose interests he had labored display ingratitude. Of course no level-headed editor expects to find
much
gratitude or charity. He must generally 1e content with the approval of bis own conscience, and pursue the course he believes to be right* regardless of either frowns or smiles, supported by his conscious rectitude. It will all come right in the end. It is hard to be misunderstood, and to find those to whoee support you have earned a right, desert you to meet alone the attacks of those whom you have incensed in pursuing the course you were convinced was right, but you will thereby learn a lesson of self-reliance, and form a habit of judging entirely for yourself, that will bei invaluable. You will be able to tell the truth, however distasteful, and refuse to utter a falsehood, no matter how much pleaaanter it may promise to make things go.
