Correspondence Daily N*w*: Brazil, Aug. 6. The inside arrangement of the Presbyterian church will be completed in a few days by the addition of ne# seats. They will involve an expense of about #400, and will add greatly to the internal appearance of the building. The churc$i is now en tirely out of debt, having sold the parsonage and raised a small amount of money to discharge a mortgage on the church property. No regular services are being held at present.
Prof. J. C. Gregg went to Martin coun ty yesterday to complete the geological suryey of the ihines in that district.
A shooting tournament, at glass ball, is tci take place at the fair ground to-day, the prize to be a fine shotgun. It will be participated in by all the skilled shootists in town, of whom there are a number.
The "Lansing Magot" of Brazil is irritfltbd considerably over tKe "Colored Ofidet Band," which has beert organized luislqt in the campaign iu Clay county. The colored race have a pcculiir disgusV for anything on the border of "decay," consequently their utter abhorrence of the "magot," and with the assistance of the News, Clay county will loom up a, fine Republican majority this fall, the Democratic magot notwithstanding. tJlay county's candidate, Wm. M. Ridpath was yesterday successul in receiving the nomination at Greencastle for joiiit Representative between Cla^ Putnam and Hendricks counties. A number of personB were present from this county, uomefrom town, some miners and some farmers, representing the variotis industries of the county, and impressed upon the convention expediency of nominating a candidate on whom the various elements here could unite. Such a candidate they claimed t«* have in the person of Mr. Rid path, and accordingly his nomination was procured with ease and great unanimity. Hon. D. E. Williamson, of Greencastle, was his opponent. Upon the first ballot Mr. Rfdpath received nineteen votes i% Clay and Hendricks counties, which was just sufficient to nominate. The name of ti*. Will lam son was then withdrawn before the vote of Putnam was taken, and the nomination of Ridpatli made unanimous. It is evident from what is known of the other counties and from wlmt is seen and heard here, that the convention iimde no mistake in its selection but on the contrary, nominated an exceptionally strong candidate, lie will receive a hearty support from the miners, and will be elected beyond any controversy.
The meeting of the Y. M. R. Club last night was one of musical interest. Arrangements were made for the reception of the flag to be presented by the ladies on next Thursday night. Mr. Will Car pouter uas elected of the State Club. Mr. Ridpatli who had just returned from Greencastle was present and addressed the meeting at some length. At the conclusion of Mr. Ridpath's speech. Mr. O'Lear/ was called upon and spoke for some time, lie was listened to with marked attention, and said some things which greatly encouraged the meeting, lie said he had been taught to believe that an irishman who would vote the Republican ticket was a little better than the devil, but recent thought and observation had led him rather to glory in the Republican party, .and that bo could see no reason why his countrymen should allow themselves to be the tail of the Democratic party. The
Democracy had duped the Irish into the belief that it was Hie only triend of their n»e.e, but since men have begun to read aud think they havo seen the sham and its solved to. shake off their allegiance to a party that has no better use for them than to avail themselves of their votes without giving them any corresponding return, lie said he had heard Mr. Voor bees at Carbon and was convinced that he w«s a demairogue trying to impnfee. upon the ignorance of the twoplo. He evidently thought that uo man in his audience had ever read the Democratic platform. He referred to Mr. Ws quotation of the platform on free trade, and thi* is the way he quoted it: *'A tariff for revenue,** leaving off the important ti junct "only." Mr. O'Lenry fpocch \va 'hugely interesting and loudly applauded by the meet inc.

Rattlesnake Jack.—Rattlesnake Jaot Is the ein&lioaioaH title li%»^haired scout #lio ajjjieareH on iur flt^ftoi^his week, Iftys the Graht County tOr) Timet, clad lit buckskin Imbiliinentd. Jack's forte is oratory and, shooting. After getting oatside of a half dozen •'straights" he opened in this style: "I'm a man from the mountains, Fin a hyena from the tropics, and a nephew of old Kit Carson I've got a string of scalps that a mule can't pack. General Crook and me ased to sleep in the same blankets and 'smile' from the same bottle I'm a poker-player from Arizona, and my mother rode on the first steamboat that ever navigated the Columbia I'm a buzzard from the 'Rockies,' and a 'cuss' on general principles hain't slept on a floor for fourteen years, except in a guard house I ken shoot a mole's eye out at 900 yards, and make a jackass rabbit ashamed of hisself for a hundred." When last seen this celebrated personage was trying to get abet that he could spit in a man's eye nine times out of ten at twenty paces.
Hydrophobia in Englana.
Some interesting figures as to the number of dleaths from hydrophobia in England and Wales during the eleven years ending in 1870, are given- in a Parliamentary return recently submitted by the Registrar-General, The total number was 387, or 82.2 a year, the returns showing an increase in the latter part of the period, the average of the first six years being 26.5 per anumn, and for the last five 45.6, while in 1876 the deaths were 53 as against 17 in 1875. This increase may possibly be laid on account of increased accuracy in ltaining statistics. Another curious point (which may possibly be considered as strengthening such an assumption) is the fact that the deaths art) almost all reported from certain districts. Of the total number of deaths (3S7), no less than 118 occurred in Lancashire, 75 west Ridinji of Yorkshire, 41 in London, and 26 iu Durham, the disease appearing to be unknown, in the Southwest, the East, the South Midland, and Wales.
A compliment, true and genuine, was paid by a sailor who was sent by his captain to carry a letter to tho lacty of his love. The "sailor, having delivered the message, stood gating in silent ndtniration upon the lady, for she was very beautiful. "Well, my good man," she said, "for what do you wait? There is no answer to be returned." "Ladv." replied the sailor, with humble denerence, "if you please I would like to know your name." "Did you not see it on the letter?" "Pardon, lady—I never learned to read. Mine has bjeen a hard, rough life.* "And for what reason, my good man, would you know my namer' "Because," answered the old tar, looking honestly tip, "in a storm at sea, with danger afore me, I would like to cali the name of the brightest thing Fd evei seen in my life. ThereM be sunshine ir it, even in the darkness i"

Home SMadk Vinegar.—Steep a pi in, of good firiu corn in two and a half gdl* loiirs cf cold water lor two or three jotirs, and then put it on tho fire and boil it until the corn shows signs Of bursting. Take it off before the grains do burst and strain off tfie liquor, adding half a pound of sugar to each gallon. Place the cask, or the jug containing it, in the sun, and in three weeks or a month the liquor will be converted into good vinegar. The writer tried this receipt, using molasses instead of sugar in one case, hut the sugar makes far the best vinegar. It is born good and cheap. Large quantities can be made by using proportionate quantities of corn, water «oa sugar.
In a paper read before the Society of Arts, London, Jaines Mactear estini:i!ed the coal consumption of the British lueiropolis at over 8,000,000 tons a year. At one per cent, this would give 80,000 tons of sulphur or 345,000 tons of oil of vitriol—more than five times the amount given off by all the sulphuric acid works in the country. The yearly consumption of coal in "Great Britain and Ireland is 114,043,940 tons, which produces 1,140,439 tons of sulphur, or 3,500,000 tons of oil of vitrioil. Some rdea may thus be fbrmed Of the vast amount of sulphuric acid gafc iu the atmosphere of thickly populated or large coal-consuming diairiets of a country*.
