Mrs. Eliza Ainsworth, mother of James Kennedy, while out driving the other day met with a severe accident. A train passed Third street just after Mrs. Ainsworth had crossed the Vandalia railroad, frightened the horse, which started on a rapid run, and escaping all control from the lady who was driving. Mrs. 'Ainsworth was thrown out and badly hurt.

Harrison and Haven** Interroicatortcft. 1. If Mr. Harrison, the Democratic Councilman, could not be bribed with the note of P. O"Sullivan for $300, how is it that he could be so easily purchased by the Chairman of that committee? 2. Councilman Harrison is a reformer. By his good looks, pluck, tenacity and as an erposer of bribery, he has reformed himself to the chairmanship of that com mittee. 8—Councilman Harrison cares nothing about the great majority of the people of Terre Haute who condemn our police force and inefficient Are department, as shown by the last election. These things are of small value when compared with the chairmanship of that committee. 4—What is all this blow about, anyhow, Mr. Harrison? "What was it begun for, what so easily done for?" The chairmanship of that committee is a small Affair. Much less, honestly conducted, than a good $800 note. 5—Harrison is a martyr as well as the chairman of that committee.

Wall Mreet Mtnuation.

A lively tussel created quite an excitement on \Vall street yesterday afternoon. Marshal Kidd, who was under the influence of a little more liquor than was good for a man in his position, walked into G. A. Schaal's saloon, corncr Third and Ohio, and ordered the tiling closed up. Thinking the intoxicated officer was jesting, Mr. Reeves, who was standing by, indulged in some joking language, which caused Kidd's blood to become more heated, and drawing a revolver, he showed signs of fight and while returning tho pistol to his pocket ho was felled by a blow from the fist of Reeves regaiuing his feet he prepared to avenge the attack and a regular boxing match began. The Marshal's friends thinking he had recicved enough, took him out the back door ami over to the Station pump and began to doctor his bleeding wound which was found to be a gash above the ej-e. Chief Stack who had been attracted by the blowing of a police whistle, on learning the cause, gave the offending Marshal a room in the hotel where all such persons find lodging. He was taken out last night and conveyed to his house on north Third street.

Memorial Day.

There is considerable disposition to reflect upon the Grand Army Post here because memorial services arc to be per formed Saturday the 29th instead of Sunlay the 30th. It will be seen by the following general order of the National officers of the G. A. R. that the local posts have nothing to do in fixing the time, but are simply obeying the orders of their superior officers as all good soldiers are in duty bound to do. The National officers are in turn obeying a general law of the order, which provides that when the 30th of May comes on Sunday tliciceremonies shall be performed on the (lay before. This fact ojight to silence all cavil on the subject. Under the law, there is no option in the matter.

The 80th day of May next occurring on Sunday. Saturday, the 29th, will lye observed as Memorial Day by tho Grand Army of the Republic, at which time will be paid the customary honors to our departed comrades who fell in defence of our flag and country. Their noble sacrifices will draw us about their honored graves with tearful eyes and loving hearts we will once more lay our annual floral tribute on their last resting place.

The Commandar-in-Chief recommend! that the Ministry be invited to deliver appropriate discourses on the Sabbath preceding Memorial Day. Many a weary and sad heart may be cheered by this pious reference to the noble deed# of those who went down in the storm of battle, or died after days of long and painful suffering in the army and ho#pitaL

The Grand Army of the Republic extends a cordial invitation to She people generally to participate In paying a grateful tribute to the memory of the heroic men who weim obedient to their country's call, and who testified their allegiance thereto by the sacrifice of their lives.

AFIRE AT RICHMOND.

One of the Ways to Stop Emigration From Ireland.

A YOUNG* MAN FROM SHELBYVTT.T.F, WHO WANTS

TO FIGHT INDIANS.

CORK, May 34.—On arrival at Manow. Sunday, of a train containing emigrants from Kerry on the way to America the train was stormed by 500 men of the South Cork militia, who beat the emi grants unmercifully and ousted them from the carriages. Some of the emi grauts were seriously injured. The militia had just been disbanded after their annual training.

RICHMOND, May 34,—In digging to-day among the ruins of his house, which was destroyed by fire, a few days ago, Bennett Baumer discovered an earthen jar over the mouth of which was drawn a piece of parchment, and on removing this he found a roll of bank bills amounting to $150. The jar had evidently been hid in the cellar where the fire could not get tit it, but how it came there or who it belongs to he has no idea.

SuEuiYviu.E, May 34.—Willie O'Neal, a sixteen-year-old lad, who has for some time been living with his uncle, Hon. S. L. Van pelt, of this city, has mysteriously disappeared from his home. When last heard from, lie was aboard ft freight train bound for Indianapolis, declaring that he would never return. This giddy youth has been reading dime novels until they have turned his head, and is burning with a desire to go West to fight the Indians. Any one hearing of tho callow young man will confer a favor on his distressing relatives by spanking him and shipping him home.

WASHINGTON, May 2«1.—Mr. Heap, Charge d'Affaires at Constantinople, in a dispatch dated April 0, reports that tho following letter has been received by telegraph at the Legation of the United States:

Mossoui,, April 5, 1880.

The terrible famine in which we exist kills all the inhabitants of the town, and those of the neighboring villages who arc assembling here in masses. Their sufferings are indescribable. Finding no cereals at all some art: eating corpses, and become ill in consequence. Their lamentations are (heartrending. Most of them are dying, as they hate nothing to cat. Those of the inhabitants who have lived untl now, between life and death, pray you to give them such assistance as will enable them to live. They take the liberty to present their prayer with tears of expectation, which are flowing from their eyes covered with blood.

ARCMUSHOP OF TJTK SYRIANS.

This letter, Mr. Heop states, was addressed to the U. 8. Legation at Constantinople, and acids that the sufferings of these people arc indescribably greater than anything of the kind in Ireland.
